Sabarmati needs signboards with helpline numbers to deter suicides
In Gandhinagar , signboards with helpline nos of counsellors at notorious suicide spots helped discourage 50 people from taking their lives last year. But no such intervention has come up at Sabarmati , a major suicide hotspot The River Rescue team of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) pulled out a body and rescued two persons from drowning in the Sabarmati on Monday. Last Thursday, a 23-year-old woman recorded a heart-wrenching two-minute video before jumping into the river following a marital dispute On February 15, a 35-year-old man suffering from depression was pulled out from the river minutes after he jumped in, thanks to an LRD jawan who risked his own life while doing so. Suicides are often a cry for help and the distressed may be greatly discouraged from taking the extreme step at such vulnerable spots if there is help at hand. Planning to invest directly in equities? Read this!
Sanjay Kumar Singh suggests key factors investors need to keep an eye on while choosing the direct investment route. Illustration: Dominic Xavier/ Rediff.com Retail participation in direct equities rose at a rapid pace last year. This is evident from the rise in the number of new demat accounts that were opened -- a record 6.8 million between April and October 2020. Non-institutional participation in the cash segment of the market, which serves as a proxy for retail participation, also went up between March and November 2020, from an average of around Rs 22,500 crore (Rs 225 billion) to Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion). Those choosing the direct investment route, however, need to bear in mind that beating professional fund managers or even the leading benchmark indices over the long term, is not an easy feat to pull off. Nanosheets help in the detection of uric acid in urine, alcohol in breath
Mass spectrometry is an importantat tool and has helped win several Nobel Prizes. It provides valuable information about the composition and structure of molecules and has found applications from drug testing to carbon dating. Using this, researchers can ionise or break down the compound into simple ions and then identify the molecules based on their masses. The current process of ionisation requires electrical potential of a few kilo volts, heat or high energy ultraviolet lasers (UV-lasers). But now, researchers have developed a new method of soft ionisation using nanosheets which eliminates the need for external energy sources completely. Sheet-like structures The team used a simple filter paper as a support material and coated this with 2D molybdenum disulphide (MoS2). “The 2D materials are sheet-like structures and graphene is a perfect example. You pull out sheets of carbon and create graphene. Similarly, this molybdenum disulphide was created as a thin sheet and spread on a ... » Learn More about Nanosheets help in the detection of uric acid in urine, alcohol in breath
From U.S. domination to energy transition, two years that changed oil
NEW YORK, - Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took the stage at the world's largest energy conference in 2019 to declare an age of U.S. dominance after a decade of rapid shale development made the United States the world's top oil and gas producer. Two years later, the oil industry is recovering from the worst recession it has ever experienced after measures to contain coronavirus stopped billions of people from traveling and wiped out one-fifth of worldwide demand for fuel. The U.S. fossil fuel industry is still reeling after tens of thousands of jobs were lost. The pandemic has also accelerated the energy transition , interrupting a steady rise in fuel consumption that may have otherwise continued for several more years unabated. Oil demand may never recover from that hit. This year, the CERAWeek conference in Houston is entirely virtual and numerous panels are dedicated to the transition to the low-carbon economy of the future, hydrogen technologies and climate ... » Learn More about From U.S. domination to energy transition, two years that changed oil

Uttarakhand tragedy: Rescue teams facing problems, 72 bodies recovered so far
Dehradun : The rescue teams engaged in clearing muck from the slush-choked tunnel of NTPC ’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydro-power project are facing problems due to constant seepage of water in the tunnel. According to Swati Bhadoriya, Chamoli district magistrate, “The water is continuously seeping into the tunnel, which is creating problems for the teams working there to clear the muck. This is despite over half a dozen water pumping machines having been pressed into service.” Sources in the rescue teams told TOI that water from the Dhauliganga river is also entering the tunnel as after the February 7 flash-floods, the river bed and the tunnel bed are at the same elevation. The rescue personnel used excavators to divert the course of river flow to ensure that the muck-removing work is not hampered. After 22 days of continuous operation, multi-agency teams have managed to clear the slush and debris till 180 metres in the main tunnel, according to the State Emergency Operation ... » Learn More about Uttarakhand tragedy: Rescue teams facing problems, 72 bodies recovered so far
