KWF to youth: Study other language but appreciate our ownTHE Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) said there was nothing wrong for millennials to study the Korean language or other foreign languages as long as they appreciate the Filipino language. KWF Chairman Virgilio Almario said in an interview after the Pammadayaw 2019: Araw ng Gawad that they could not stop someone from learning foreign languages, but urged them to study Filipino culture. The event, in celebration of Buwan ng Wika, honored outstanding Filipino scholars and students who played a big part in KWF’s mission to strengthen Filipino language.“Siguro, higit lamang interes nila na mag-aral ng Korean dahil in-love sila d’un sa dinadalang kultura ng Korean[s]. Ang mainam mangyari ay maipaalam din sa kanila na maganda ring pag-aralan ang kulturang Filipino (Maybe they are hooked with Korean language because they are in love with the culture the Koreans bring. They also need to know that it is also good to … [Read more...] about KWF to youth: Study other language but appreciate our own

KWF urges lawmakers, professionals to speak Filipino Robertzon Ramirez (The Philippine Star) - August 30, 2019 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines — The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) is urging English speaking lawmakers and professionals to love the Filipino language, noting these people are not fond of using the national language in their daily discourse. KWF chairman and National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario said there is something wrong in the appreciation of Filipino lawmakers and professionals for the national language and this needs to be addressed. Almario said it is ironic that lawmakers and professionals, who have enough knowledge of Filipino, seem to barely use it compared with the masses. “May anomalya (there’s anomaly) somewhere in consciousness ng (of) educated Filipinos, ‘yan ay kailangang malunasan (that needs to be addressed). Ang taongbayan hindi ganun, ang mga … [Read more...] about KWF urges lawmakers, professionals to speak Filipino
Buwan ng Wika — Hindi lang wika… buhay! Let us set aside politics and unnecessary issues to pave the way for the Buwan Ng Wika (Philippine Language Month) celebration. This seems to be the only longest observation and celebration of our languages. But for some reason, we have been only focused on the national language, Filipino when we should also be aware of the many languages that abound us. Review 101: First, our national language is Filipino. Second, we have eight major languages: Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Waray, Bicolano, Cebuano and Hiligaynon (Ilonggo). Third, we have around 185 languages and dialects. Fourth, whether you accept it or not – the official language or as Peter Wallace coined it, the “language unifier” is Filipino and English. Yes, there is much debate on this but let’s leave it for now. In 1946, President Sergio Osmena, through Proclamation No. 35 of March 26 declared a week-long … [Read more...] about Buwan ng Wika — Hindi lang wika… buhay!
… [Read more...] about Paglaho ng mga katutubong wika sa Pilipinas, layong pigilan
