MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) set its five-peat bid in motion by hacking out a four-set victory over De La Salle-Zobel in their first game of the UAAP Season 81 high school volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym. Camille Lamina, filling in a huge void left by star setter Joyme Cagande, tallied 20 excellent sets on top of two aces to pilot the Bullpups to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22 triumph. Reigning MVP Mhicaele Belen and Erin Pangilinan each scored 13 points, while skipper Faith Nisperos added 10 points for NU. Meanwhile, Adamson University took the early lead in the girls division after sweeping its opening weekend. MANILA, Philippines – A rookie swimmer and a veteran baseball player wound up earning the highest individual honors upon the conclusion of the 80th season of the UAAP on Wednesday at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Auditorium. Francis "Kiko" Gesmundo of the De La Salle University Green Batters and Kirsten Chloe Daos of the Ateneo de Manila University swimming team were named the Athletes of the Year for Season 80. Daos had a dominant freshman year for the FAST Ateneo Swimming Team, as she won Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors. She won gold medals in the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter butterfly, as well as in the 200-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter freestyle events. She also added a silver from the 100-meter freestyle. Kianna Dy, Majoy Baron, and Dawn Macandili all had their shining moments in La Salle's 26-24, 25-20, 26-24 conquest of Far Eastern University in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball finals – a hard-earned triumph that gave the Lady Spikers their third straight championship. Four Philippine Swimming League (PSL) standouts were recognized during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards Night on Tuesday at the Maynila Hall of The Manila Hotel. PSL Swimmers of the Year Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh of Immaculate Heart of Mary College-Parañaque and Marc Bryan Dula of Wisenheimer Academy received the Tony Siddayao Award. The plum is the highest award given to the best junior athletes in the country who performed well in local and international competitions. The 12-year old Mojdeh won 56 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals in international competitions on top of setting five new Philippine records in her age group.
