Victim of Bangkok gang may be elderly European
PHUKET: A scan of body parts found in a refrigerator during a raid last week on a building in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Soi 56 suggests it was an elderly European man who was dismembered by an electric saw, Dr Udomsak Hoonwichit, of Chulalongkorn University’s faculty of medicine, said yesterday. The deceased man’s DNA will be collected for identification and given to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a check with its database, he said. Udomsak and Central Institute of Forensic Science director Suphot Nakngernthong took the dismembered body for a virtual autopsy yesterday by CT scan to try to determine the time of death, the cause and possibly some clues about the killer. That was carried out while other identification methods were used such as checking clothes and dental records, DNA sampling, and testing for traces of toxic elements or poison, Udomsak said. The results would also be sent to the FBI for a second check. “The fact the body parts were frozen could affect ... » Learn More about Victim of Bangkok gang may be elderly European
Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic
CAIRO: For Ramadan this year, Magdy Hafez has been longing to reclaim a cherished ritual: Performing the nighttime group prayers called taraweeh at the mosque once again. Last year, the coronavirus upended the 68-year-old Egyptian’s routine of going to the mosque to perform those prayers, traditional during Islam’s holiest month. The pandemic had disrupted Islamic worship the world over, including in Egypt where mosques were closed to worshippers last Ramadan. “I have been going to the mosque for 40 years so it was definitely a very, very, difficult thing,” he said. “But our religion orders us to protect one another.” Still, “It’s a whole other feeling, and the spirituality in Ramadan is like nothing else.” Egypt has since allowed most mosques to reopen for Friday communal prayers and for this Ramadan it will let them hold taraweeh, also with precautions, including shortening its duration. Ramadan, which begins this week, comes as much of the world has been hit by an ... » Learn More about Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic

MANILA, Philippines — The government’s P1,000 cash aid is not be enough to buy food and other essential items during a two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). But the “ECQ bubble” which is now being enforced in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal is now going into its second week having started last March 28 after President Rodrigo Duterte approved a recommendation from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF). Call to prioritise vaccination for teachers
TEACHERS should be given priority to receive the Covid-19 vaccination following the reopening of schools, said Jagdeep Singh. The Penang local government committee chairman said there were about 500,000 teachers nationwide but so far, only 55,539 of them were eligible under the first phase of vaccinations as frontliners. “With schools reopened fully now, teachers are considered in the high-risk category as they are no longer working from home. “I hope the Education and Health Ministries would give them priority as frontliners. “Vaccinating them would make it better and safer for the schools as well, ” he said after a spot check on standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance at Han Chiang High School in Jalan Lim Lean Teng on Tuesday. The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme is being implemented in three phases, with Phase 1 from Feb to April for the frontliners involving 500,000 people. Phase 2, from April to August, involves 9.4 million people comprising senior ... » Learn More about Call to prioritise vaccination for teachers
