SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has vowed that every Filipino will be given access to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines with consideration to the order of priority of sectors as determined by authorities and health experts. The chairman of the Senate Health committee said the vaccination program was based on science, not politics, especially when it comes to providing access to those who need them. “There’s no problem, you know, [these vaccines are] for all Filipinos, whether you’re a critic or you love us,” he said during a radio interview on February 28. Go added that the government treats everyone equally regardless of his or her political views. He urged critics to work with the government so the country could immediately recover from the pandemic. He added that it was alright to criticize the government so long as these alleged detractors do not spread misinformation or fake news. Senate OKs bills deferring PhilHealth premium hike
THE Senate Committee on Health and Demography, led by Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, approved on Tuesday measures that will defer the scheduled monthly contribution rates increase of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth). “President [Rodrigo] Duterte has agreed to temporarily suspend the increase in PhilHealth contribution rates while we are in a pandemic,” Go said. “When the [Universal Health Care Act] was crafted, no one knew that a pandemic would hit us. Although the increase in PhilHealth contributions ensures sufficient funding for the health care of its members … it is only reasonable and equitable to postpone incremental premiums due to the bad economic conditions caused by [the crisis].” The UHC Law, Republic Act 11223, mandates an increase in PhilHealth premium contribution from 3 percent to 3.5 percent in 2021. Mandatory contributions will be increased annually until 2025. “The government, as a whole, must do its best to unburden Filipinos by ... » Learn More about Senate OKs bills deferring PhilHealth premium hike

Fighting in Yemen’s Marib kills 90 in 24 hours: Govt military sources
DUBAI (AFP) - Fierce fighting between Yemeni pro-government forces and Iran-backed Houthi rebels has killed at least 90 combatants on both sides in the past 24 hours, government military sources said on Saturday (March 6). The Shi'ite rebels launched an offensive last month to seize Marib, the last stronghold in northern Yemen of pro-government forces which are backed by a Saudi-led military coalition. The clashes in the oil-rich province left 32 dead among government forces and loyalist tribes, while 58 Houthi rebels were killed in coalition air strikes, the sources told AFP. They said heavy clashes broke out on six fronts as government forces were able to counter attacks by the Houthis, who managed to advance only on the Kassara front north-west of Marib city. The fighting also left dozens of people wounded, the sources added. The loss of Marib would be a huge blow for the Yemeni government, but would also threaten catastrophe for civilians, including hundreds of ... » Learn More about Fighting in Yemen’s Marib kills 90 in 24 hours: Govt military sources
Houthi offensive on Yemen’s Marib threatens mass displacement, UN warns
DUBAI (REUTERS) - An offensive by Yemen's Houthi group to take Marib city, the last stronghold of the internationally recognised government, threatens to displace hundreds of thousands and complicate a renewed diplomatic push to end the war, UN officials say. The gas-rich region of Marib has been a refuge for hundreds of thousands of people fleeing violence during Yemen's six-year-old war, expanding its main city rapidly. A frontline is now roughly 30km away to the city's west, a government official told Reuters, and humanitarian concerns are growing. "An assault on the city would put two million civilians at risk, with hundreds of thousands potentially forced to flee - with unimaginable humanitarian consequences," UN aid chief Mark Lowcock said on Tuesday (Feb 16), urging de-escalation. The recent push towards Marib by Houthi forces, who control Yemen's most populous areas, comes alongside intensified drone attacks into Saudi Arabia by the Iran-aligned group.
