British PM Theresa May defends Brexit deal as talk of no-confidence vote grows

November 16, 2018 straitstimes Leave a Comment

LONDON (REUTERS) - British Prime Minister Theresa May won the backing of two senior ministers on Friday (Nov 16) as she battled to defend her much-criticised draft divorce deal with the European Union as calls grew for a vote of no confidence in her leadership. More than two years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU, it is still unclear how, on what terms or even if it will leave the EU as planned on March 29, 2019. Mrs May, who won the top job in the turmoil that followed the 2016 referendum, on Tuesday (Nov 13) announced she had agreed a Brexit deal which ensured the UK left the world's biggest trading bloc in the smoothest way possible. But Brexit minister Dominic Raab resigned on Thursday over her deal, sending the pound tumbling, followed by a number of other colleagues. Other mutinous lawmakers in her party have openly spoken of ousting her and said bluntly that the Brexit deal would not pass parliament. Mrs May, who has defiantly vowed to stay on as prime minister, … [Read more...] about British PM Theresa May defends Brexit deal as talk of no-confidence vote grows

Britain points finger at Putin over spy poisoning

September 7, 2018 channelnewsasia Leave a Comment

LONDON: Britain pointed the finger at Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Sep 6) for a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in England - a charge that Moscow rejected as "unacceptable".The leaders of the United States, France, Germany and Canada later said they had "full confidence" in Britain's assessment that officers from Russia's military intelligence service were behind the Novichok attack that nearly killed Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March.British Security Minister Ben Wallace said that Putin was "ultimately" responsible for the poisoning in the southwestern city of Salisbury, prompting an angry response from Moscow."For us any sort of accusation regarding the Russian leadership is unacceptable," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.Britain has previously accused Russia of orchestrating the attack, but Moscow denies any involvement and insists it is ready to cooperate in any investigation."Neither Russia's … [Read more...] about Britain points finger at Putin over spy poisoning
