Le Tour de Filipinas hits road May 20 Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) - April 20, 2018 - 10:56pm MANILA, Philippines — The Le Tour de Filipinas returns to the so-called “Cradle of Philippine Cycling” for its ninth edition on May 20-23, pedaling from Quezon City to Baguio passing through the sport’s hotbeds Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan. The Union Cycliste Internationale-sanctioned race starts with the 151.32 K Stage 1 from the Quezon City Hall to Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, followed by the 157.90K Cabanatuan to Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya Stage Two, then the 174.50K Stage Three from Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya to Dagupan City before culminating in the 154.65K race from Lingayen up to the City of Pines. Co-organisers Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), the Tourism and Sport Ministry, Amaury Sport Organisation and Move Asia signed a three year deal to stage the cycling event between 2018-2020. Two events of 140km and 70km distance will be open for cyclists to compete. More than 2,000 participants are expected to take part in the competition. The contract signing has made Thailand the first country in ASEAN to be able to draw the world-class event to the country. The event will also help boosting the sport industry in the country, as it has a large fanbase. Technology and know-how by professionals will also be brought in to improve the local industry, driving the country to be the cycling hub of Asia. According to organizer Ube Media Inc., the International Cycling Union (UCI) and Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) have approved of the new dates of the race that was originally scheduled last February 18 to 21 but was cancelled because of Mayon Volcano’s eruption. The UCI emailed its confirmation of the new dates late Saturday. The route has also been transferred from the Bicol Region—where it was suppose to kick off in Catanduanes to Quezon City, Central Luzon, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Baguio City. The Le Tour de Filipinas is the only road race sanctioned by the UCI and the ACC.
