WASHINGTON: At a time when the United States says China is aggressively spying on its government, a push by President Donald Trump to fix the system that determines who can and cannot be trusted with secrets is behind schedule and disorganised, according to US officials and an internal agency report. While the process for security clearance background checks has been broken for years, the Republican Trump administration delayed starting a revamp for months, said Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. With a Jun 24 deadline for the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to begin transferring thousands of employees and contractors to the Department of Defence under Trump's plan, it is unclear when the overhaul will be completed, said four government sources who requested anonymity. Most security clearances involve jobs at the White House, Defense, State, Homeland Security, Energy and Justice departments, the Central Intelligence Agency … [Read more...] about Top secret: Trump’s revamp of US security clearances stumbling

SINGAPORE - The United States, followed by China, is the clear world leader in artificial intelligence (AI) development, according to a new index. The Cambrian AI Index , which measures countries' AI readiness, compared the strategies and development environments of 13 countries with national AI strategies. Singapore, with a score of 0.18, comes in 12th, a spot above United Arab Emirates in the list that includes Japan, South Korea, India and Israel. The researchers assessed the countries on the indicators that incorporate the countries' preconditions, research and development, and the degree of commercialisation of AI. They assigned the US with a benchmark value of 1, against which the other countries are measured. China scored 0.62, while Japan came in third with a score of 0.3. We must prepare youth for artificial intelligence By 2029 computers will surpass human intelligence, says futurist Ray Kurzweil, Google director of engineering. That’s only ten short years away. It’s hard to dismiss Kurzweil’s technological predictions. Of 147 forecasts 126 came true by 2009, for an 86-percent batting average. In his first of eight books, “The Age of Intelligent Machines,” 1990, Kurzweil analyzed that the spread of cell phones and faxes would crush the Soviet Union. Late the following year it did. Meeting in 2005 Mikhail Gorbachev told him that electronic communication had zapped apparat control of the flow of information. Kurzweil also noted from advances in chess software that machines would beat the best human players by 2000. In 1997 world champion Garry Kasparov resigned to IBM’s Deep Blue computer. And at a time when only 2.6 million people in the world were using (very erratic) Internet in … [Read more...] about We must prepare youth for artificial intelligence
