Residents of Xiazhuang, Chongqing, used to risk their lives whenever they ventured out of the mountain village. Surrounded by steep cliffs about 1,000 meters high, there was only one pathway out of the village, and it took the villagers three days to walk to the main town. In the four decades to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or commuting to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing other activities, said village head Mao Xianglin. As a local saying goes, it is even hard for birds to fly out of the village. Mao, who had been in his position for two years, summoned nearly all of Xiazhuang's 400 villagers for a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains. "Almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project," said the 61-year-old. "Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. India vs England: Ashwin second-fastest to take 400 Test wickets after Muttiah Muralitharan
Ahmedabad: India spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin became the second fastest to 400 wickets on Thursday -- after Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan -- when he dismissed Jofra Archer in the second innings of the pink-ball Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Ashwin overtook New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee and South Africa's Dale Steyn. The pacers had taken 80 Tests while Ashwin scalped his 400th wicket in only his 77th match. Muralitharan had reached the milestone in 72 games. Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler in the 400 Test wickets club after Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. The England innings also saw Ashwin dismiss Ben Stokes for the 11th time, the highest number of times he has been dismissed by a single bowler. In the 18th over, Stokes was given leg-before off Ashwin's ball to see the Englishman walk back to the pavilion as the off-spinner's 398th wicket. Ind vs Eng third Test at Motera | The Axar-Ashwin show: India hammers England in day-night Test inside two days
Left-arm spinner Axar Patel created an illusion of turn with 11 straighter deliveries that put India on the brink of the World Test Championship final with a 10-wicket demolition of England inside two days in the day-night third Test in Ahmedabad on Thursday. In only his second Test, Patel (15-0-32-5), with a match-haul of 11/70, relentlessly hit the good length area and hoodwinked England batsmen, who played for turn only to find that there was none on offer from him. The result was their lowest total against India — 81 all out in 30.4 overs leaving the hosts with a target of 49 which they achieved with minimum fuss taking a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. The visitors were also knocked out of contention from the WTC final. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (15-3-48-4) proved to be an ideal foil for Patel, becoming the fourth Indian bowler and second fastest in the world to complete a commendable milestone of 400 Test wickets with the dismissal of Jofra Archer. Online services help drive car dealer Inchcape’s profit beat, bring back dividend
Inchcape on Thursday posted a better-than-expected full-year profit and resumed its annual dividend, as online services help it continue delivering vehicles at a time when the pandemic has forced car showrooms to stay shut. The company, which operates in around 30 markets, said it expects significant growth in profits and higher operating margin in 2021, if there are no severe pandemic-related restrictions. Inchcape was able to deliver vehicles, offer a "click-and-collect" service and continue to perform after-sales services through most of the pandemic, which helped its performance pick up mostly in the second half of last year, it said. The company, which sells new and used cars along with car parts, proposed an annual divided of 6.9 pence per share. The global health crisis has added to the troubles of UK car dealers, which were already facing muted demand and pressured margins following Britain's decision to leave the European Union . Vijay Hazare: Iyer’s ton helps Mumbai beat Maharashtra
IMAGE: Shreyas Iyer anchored the Mumbai chase and saw them home in 47.2 overs. Photograph: BCCI/IPL Mumbai rode on skipper Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 103 to beat Maharashtra by six wickets in their Elite Group D game of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, in Jaipur, on Tuesday. This was Mumbai's second successive win after they had beaten Delhi in the lung-opener. Opting to bat first, Maharashtra posted 279/9, with centuries from Yash Nahar (119) and Azim Kazi (104) despite experienced Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni (5/44) running through their top-order. But it was Iyer, who anchored the Mumbai chase and saw them home in 47.2 overs. Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (19) could not convert his start and was trapped in front of the wicket by Kulkarni. Kulkarni then wreaked havoc as he dismissed Naushad Shaikh (0), experienced Kedar Jadhav (5) and Ankit Bawane (0) in quick succession as Maharashtra was reeling at 38/4 in 8.5 overs. However, Nahar and number six batsman Kazi had other ... » Learn More about Vijay Hazare: Iyer’s ton helps Mumbai beat Maharashtra

Benchmark Sensex reversed a three- session slide to end at 33,970 after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme. Investors also took heart from upbeat macro indicators and firm global cues, brokers said. The finance ministry today sought Parliament’s nod for extra expenditure of Rs 80,000 crore towards recapitalisation of bad loans-saddled public sector banks through bonds. State-run lenders made handsome gains in today’s session. Index heavyweight SBI rose 1.72 per cent, while UCO Bank, IDBI, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Oriental Bank of Commerce, among others, rallied by up to 8.50 per cent. Market sentiment was bolstered after a monthly survey showed the Indian services sector returned to marginal growth in December as new orders broadly stabilised. The BSE benchmark Sensex opened higher at 33,912.49 and hovered in a range of 33,995.40 to 33,802.13 before finishing at 33,969.64, showing a gain of 176.26 points or ... » Learn More about Sensex marks first gain of 2018, rebounds 176 points
