WASHINGTON: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles pleaded guilty on Monday to charges it conspired with company executives to make illegal, lavish gifts to United Auto Workers ( UAW ) leaders and undermined workers' confidence in collective bargaining. The U.S. unit of the Italian-American automaker, which is now part of Stellantis NV, said in January it reached agreement with U.S. prosecutors to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Labor Management Relations Act and pay a $30 million fine. U.S. District Judge Paul Borman said at a court hearing he accepted Fiat Chrysler's guilty plea and set a June 21 sentencing date. Fiat Chrysler also agreed to three years of probation and oversight by an independent compliance monitor to ensure it follows federal labor laws. The Justice Department said Fiat Chrysler conspired to make more than $3.5 million in illegal payments to then-UAW officers from 2009 through 2016. Deputies discuss bolstering Shanghai’s agriculture sector
Developing high-tech agriculture and the seed industry should be the focus of rural development in Shanghai, deputies suggested at the ongoing annual session of the municipal people's congress. Deputy Shen Zhong, who is also the Party chef of the Chenjia township in Chongming Island, said that the problems faced by Shanghai's agriculture scene - labor shortage and low economic output – can be solved by developing smart agriculture solutions. "I suggest that the new infrastructure of 5G bases should cover rural areas so that smart farming machinery, such as drone and unmanned harvesters, can be applied," he said. Deputy Wang Dedi, who works at the municipal agriculture commission, said Shanghai should invest in agricultural technology, especially in the seed sector. "Turning the limited agricultural land in Shanghai into a testing field for seed technology will contribute to the high-quality development of Shanghai's agriculture and the national food safety," Wang said. Nio’s Q1 sales to surge 400% year-on-year
China's leading electric car startup Nio said its sales in the first quarter this year would reach 20,000, which would be more than five times the figure in the same period last year. Nio gave the estimate on Tuesday when it released its financial statement for the year 2020, in which it delivered 43,728 vehicles. In the first two months of the year, its combined sales totaled over 12,000 vehicles. "Supported by competitive product offerings, outstanding services and innovative business models, we have won increasing recognition from our users," said Nio Chairman and CEO William Li. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nio sold only 3,838 vehicles in the first quarter last year. But its sales rose as the pandemic was under control in China and a government fund in Hefei, Anhui province, decided to invest in the company. Nio's total revenue in the year hit $2.49 billion, up 107.8 percent year-on-year, and the gross profit was $287 million. It was the first year for the startup to see ... » Learn More about Nio’s Q1 sales to surge 400% year-on-year
UN appeals for 266 mln USD to feed over 3 mln refugees in Eastern Africa
Video Player Close NAIROBI, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Two UN agencies on Tuesday appealed for 29.23 billion shillings (about 266 million U.S. dollars) to end food ration cuts for more than 3 million refugees in Eastern Africa. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, and World Food Programme (WFP) said that funding shortages have forced cuts up to 60 percent and warned of growing risks including increased malnutrition and anaemia as well as stunted child growth. "We have never had such a terrible funding situation for refugees. We have a 266 million dollar shortfall for the next six months for refugees' minimum needs," said Michael Dunford, WFP Regional Director for Eastern Africa, in a joint statement issued in Nairobi. "We are deeply concerned that if cuts continue, they will be faced with a very difficult decision: stay in the camps where food and nutrition security is deteriorating or consider risking going back when it is unsafe." He said the immediate priority must be to restore ... » Learn More about UN appeals for 266 mln USD to feed over 3 mln refugees in Eastern Africa
