New Delhi: With a goal of promoting local manufacturing, India’s new budget tripled to 15 per cent the duty on imported solar lanterns , while the duty on solar inverters would rise from 5 per cent to 20 per cent. The off-grid solar industry, which already saw a 10 per cent decline in solar lantern sales in 2019-2020, is bracing for an ever bigger hit because of the new tariffs. As a result, off-grid industry executives are calling for a more measured approach that accounts for the current gap in quality local production while ensuring that India’s rural poor are protected from expected price hikes until that gap is filled. “We understand that the increase in duties has the undesirable effect of making certain products in the market expensive for end-customers,” said Piyush Mathur, board member of CLEAN, a trade group representing over 200 distributed renewable energy companies. “However, the new duty structure also offers our member companies an opportunity to build and ... » Learn More about Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

Petchem giant Dow braces for “high impact” from climate change – executive
SINGAPORE: Dow Inc is adjusting its carbon footprint and product slate to adapt to climate change and tap evolving consumption trends tied to the global energy transition, a senior executive said this week. Dow has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2050 by boosting the use of renewable energy, such as wind power in the southern United States, and by improving energy efficiency at its petrochemical plants, Dow's Asia Pacific President Jon Penrice told Reuters on Wednesday. It is also developing products that help customers cut their own emissions such as sealants that improve heating efficiencies in buildings, materials to lighten electric vehicles and make batteries more efficient, he said. "We actually see climate change as something that's very likely to happen, high probability and high impact," Penrice said. "It's going to be a big opportunity I think for many, many players in the petrochemical industry." Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
Residents of Xiazhuang, Chongqing, used to risk their lives whenever they ventured out of the mountain village. Surrounded by steep cliffs about 1,000 meters high, there was only one pathway out of the village, and it took the villagers three days to walk to the main town. In the four decades to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or commuting to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing other activities, said village head Mao Xianglin. As a local saying goes, it is even hard for birds to fly out of the village. Mao, who had been in his position for two years, summoned nearly all of Xiazhuang's 400 villagers for a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains. "Almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project," said the 61-year-old. "Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. We had to do something ... » Learn More about Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
India vs England: Ashwin second-fastest to take 400 Test wickets after Muttiah Muralitharan
Ahmedabad: India spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin became the second fastest to 400 wickets on Thursday -- after Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan -- when he dismissed Jofra Archer in the second innings of the pink-ball Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Ashwin overtook New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee and South Africa's Dale Steyn. The pacers had taken 80 Tests while Ashwin scalped his 400th wicket in only his 77th match. Muralitharan had reached the milestone in 72 games. Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler in the 400 Test wickets club after Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. The England innings also saw Ashwin dismiss Ben Stokes for the 11th time, the highest number of times he has been dismissed by a single bowler. In the 18th over, Stokes was given leg-before off Ashwin's ball to see the Englishman walk back to the pavilion as the off-spinner's 398th wicket. Ind vs Eng third Test at Motera | The Axar-Ashwin show: India hammers England in day-night Test inside two days
Left-arm spinner Axar Patel created an illusion of turn with 11 straighter deliveries that put India on the brink of the World Test Championship final with a 10-wicket demolition of England inside two days in the day-night third Test in Ahmedabad on Thursday. In only his second Test, Patel (15-0-32-5), with a match-haul of 11/70, relentlessly hit the good length area and hoodwinked England batsmen, who played for turn only to find that there was none on offer from him. The result was their lowest total against India — 81 all out in 30.4 overs leaving the hosts with a target of 49 which they achieved with minimum fuss taking a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. The visitors were also knocked out of contention from the WTC final. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (15-3-48-4) proved to be an ideal foil for Patel, becoming the fourth Indian bowler and second fastest in the world to complete a commendable milestone of 400 Test wickets with the dismissal of Jofra Archer. Tiger Woods will not face charges in car crash
‘This remains an accident and an accident is not a crime. They do happen, unfortunately.’ IMAGE: The damaged car of Tiger Woods is towed away after he was involved in a car crash, near Los Angeles on Tuesday. Photograph: Mario Anzuoni/Reuters Tiger Woods will not face criminal charges in the car crash that left him with serious injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said on Wednesday, as the golf great recovered from extensive surgery to repair his fractured right leg and shattered ankle. Investigators were still trying to determine what caused Woods, 45, to lose control of the grey Genesis sport utility vehicle he was driving on Tuesday morning. Woods was negotiating a curved, downhill stretch of highway that authorities said was notoriously dangerous when the luxury SUV he was driving veered across the opposite lanes, collided with a road sign and rolled several times before coming to rest. Photograph: Octav Ganea/Inquam Photos via Reuters A spectacular Olivier Giroud overhead kick gave Chelsea a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg in Bucharest. The French striker broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with an outrageous bicycle kick which was flagged offside but eventually given following a lengthy VAR review as the ball had come off Atletico's Mario Hermoso before Giroud hit it. Joao Felix had attempted an overhead effort earlier in the second half but missed the target in one of few chances for Atletico, who were forced to play their home leg over 3,000 kilometres from Madrid due to Spanish restrictions on arrivals from Britain to control the spread of COVID-19 infections.
