Life has come a full circle for singer Sukhbir. He never expected that one day he would be savouring his own decades old style of recreating old tracks on stage to make them peppier again. Sukhbir, who is settled in Dubai now, says when his '90s hit songs Taare Gin Gin (Hindi Medium) and Sauda Khara Khara (Good Newwz) were featured in Bollywood films he went into flashback mode and remembered his days of redoing old songs. Sukhbir, a Kenyan national, recalls singing Heera group's Dowain Jaaniya, a track very close to his heart. "This Kumar and Dhami ji's creation instills energy in me. I have grown up listening to it and singing. So, if someone says 'oh, we have grown old listening to Taare Gin Gin or Nachdi', which I redone myself once again recently, I tell them that Dowain Jaaniya is from my time. Acting keeps this archetypal drunkard tale afloat
Repetitive scenesBut after a point, the scenes of a drunk Murali lying on the road or having a tiff with his family becomes repetitive. It seemed the director wanted to drill in the message and make the viewer feel the drunkard’s plight. Editing out some of these would have helped in cutting down the run-time of two-and-a-half hours. If not for Jayasurya’s earnest performance, these parts would have become even more of a drag.
