Kona EV owners say Hyundai mishandling recall for battery fires

SEOUL: Some owners of Hyundai Motor's Kona electric vehicles say the South Korean automaker is bungling a major recall with delays and poor communication, and risks losing buyers as it targets the No.3 spot in the fast-growing sector. Hyundai said last month it would replace the battery systems in some 82,000 electric vehicles globally at a cost of US$900 million following fires in 15 Kona EVs. But Hyundai has yet to convey a clear plan to owners on when and how they can expect to have a potential fire hazard they are driving fixed, some of the owners have complained. "When I asked Hyundai's repair centre when exactly my Kona EV will be getting a battery replacement, they just told me that they would put me ahead in the line, but I haven't received the exact date yet," a 34-year-old Kona EV owner in Seoul surnamed Kim told Reuters. Owners who spoke to Reuters declined to give their full names, citing concerns about privacy and a potential backlash from Hyundai. Firms eye investments in vaccine manufacturing

Several companies are looking at possible investments in the manufacture of vaccines, a trade official said. In a recent virtual briefing, Board of Investments (BOI) Executive Director for Industry Development Services Corazon Dichosa said that some of the firms are looking for technology partners. She said, however, that talks are still premature. “The private sector is still monitoring what vaccine platform should be used in the Philippines and depending on the technology platform, they will determine the cost and then the facility that would be established for that. They are also looking at the market. Most of them are looking at the domestic market. They are looking at the size of the market if their operations will be feasible or viable,” said Dichosa. “They are in those stages. What’s good is there is an interest to do that and we in the government, I think it is really high time for us to have a vaccine manufacturing facility,” she added. LG may shut down smartphone unit instead of selling it

LG may be forced to shut down its smartphone business if talks with potential buyers fail. The Korean Herald reports that LG may shut down the smartphone business instead of selling it. A source claimed that LG had discussions with several parties over a potential sale, but they were not making much progress. Industry analysts believe LG may opt to quit the smartphone business if there is no interested buyer. LG CEO Kown Bong-seok sent an internal memo to employees in January informing them that it is time for the company "to make a cold judgement and the best choice". In addition, he shared that the company "is considering all possible measures, including sale, withdrawal and downsizing of the smartphone business". Its upcoming flagship is also reportedly put on hold. This article was first published in Hardware Zone . ... » Learn More about LG may shut down smartphone unit instead of selling it

LG’s decision to pull out of smartphone business could be announced on April 5

LG has decided to pull out of the smartphone business according to The Korea Times. Industy sources claim the South Korean company recently decided to pull out of the smartphone business  after failing to reach agreement with several interested buyers which include Vietnam's Vingroup. The Korea Herald reported more than a week ago that not much progress had been made with potential parties. LG is believed to be making an official announcement at its board meeting on April 5. An LG Electronics official said there is nothing to comment on and "every possibility is open". He added that the specific direction of the mobile communication business will be announced. In January this year, LG CEO Kwong Bong-seok sent an internal memo to employees informing them of the need "to make a cold judgement and the best choice" for the smartphone business. South Korea’s LG becomes first major smartphone brand to withdraw from market; a loss-making department for electric giant

Its decision to pull out will leave its 10% share in North America, where it is the No. 3 brand, to be gobbled up by smartphone titans Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics . The division has logged nearly six years of losses totalling some $4.5 billion, and dropping out of the fiercely competitive sector would allow LG to focus on growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices and smart homes, it said in a statement. In better times, LG was early to market with a number of cell phone innovations including ultra-wide angle cameras and was once in 2013 the world's third-largest smartphone manufacturer behind Samsung and Apple. But later, its flagship models suffered from both software and hardware mishaps which combined with slower software updates saw the brand steadily slip in favour. Analysts have also criticised the company for lack of expertise in marketing compared to Chinese rivals. Currently its global share is only about 2%. It shipped 23 million phones ... » Learn More about South Korea’s LG becomes first major smartphone brand to withdraw from market; a loss-making department for electric giant

LG Electronics to end mobile phone production

South Korean technology company LG Electronics said Monday it will exit its unprofitable mobile phone business in the face of stiff competition from rivals like Samsung Electronics. "LG Electronics has been closely reviewing the direction of its mobile business, and at a board meeting on April 5 it decided to exit the mobile business by July 31," the company said in a statement, adding that it plans to focus on its core business to prepare for the future. LG Electronics said in January it would consider "all possibilities" for the future of its mobile phone division. The company first started making mobile phones in 1995. LG Electronics was once the world's third-largest mobile phone maker in terms of market share. But its mobile business has been in the red since the second quarter of 2015, with its accumulated operating losses reaching 5 trillion won ($4.4 billion) last year, according to Yonhap News Agency. The company said it will retain the core technologies developed ... » Learn More about LG Electronics to end mobile phone production

Looking back: LG’s history of innovative smartphones

With LG officially announcing its exit from the smartphone industry, a #throwback for its innovative smartphones is in order. Unlike many phone makers that aped after other competitors, LG was at times a brave and innovative provider of handsets. Read on to see the iconic phones it once had. 1. LG KG920 One of the earliest phones with a 5MP camera is none other than the LG KG920. Launched in 2006, the phone's focus and selling point was its camera module - uncommon and powerful for its time. It was nearly excellent if not for the lack of 3G network connectivity. 2. LG GD900 Crystal In 2009 at CommunicAsia, LG launched the "world's first phone with a transparent touchpad". That's the LG GD900 Crystal, and it wasn't just special-looking for its time. It came with an 8MP camera, had 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi support, and fully customisable Gestures to have shortcuts of your choosing. 3. LG GD910 Before smartwatches were smartwatches, LG had something called a "watch phone". ... » Learn More about Looking back: LG’s history of innovative smartphones

LG to announce new smartphone with possible T-shaped display

LG to announce new smartphone with possible T-shaped display It appears that LG has gone off the deep end - in an innovative way. In a 30-second oceanic teaser trailer , the technology chaebol hinted that it will announce a new smartphone come Sept 14, 2020 10AM EDT (10PM SGT) on their official YouTube and Facebook platforms. Dubbed as the Explorer Project, this upcoming LG phone is part of LG's renewed smartphone strategy where they home in on addressing phone users needs by reshaping conventional approaches to mobile devices. LG has already moved away from alphanumerical and specifications-based increments with the launch of LG Velvet back in May. What's unusual was also hinted in its trailer video - the phone will likely come with a T-shaped display with side wings, akin to a Latin cross. The strange-yet-different configuration was leaked twice previously with videos of it usage appearing on Android Authority's video channels . The unique design was further hinted ... » Learn More about LG to announce new smartphone with possible T-shaped display

Samsung, LG see 40% profits rise

SEOUL: South Korea’s two biggest electronics firms both forecast jumps of around 40 percent in their first-quarter operating profits on Wednesday, with coronavirus-driven working from home fueling global demand for semiconductors and home appliances. Tech behemoth Samsung Electronics said in an earnings estimate that it expected operating profits of 9.3 trillion won ($8.3 billion) for January to March, up 44.2 percent from a year earlier, largely driven by robust sales of smartphones and the launch of its flagship Galaxy S21 series. Meanwhile, LG Electronics, South Korea’s second-largest appliance firm after Samsung, forecast a 39.2-percent jump in operating profits for the same period to 1.5 trillion won. The Samsung figures were ahead of expectations, said Gloria Tsuen, vice president at Moody’s Investors Service, telling Agence France-Presse that “tight supplies in the semiconductor segment, especially DRAM,” among others, had helped the firm’s performance.
