BAMBANG, Nueva Vizcaya: A joint operation by the Cagayan provincial and Solana municipal police has led to the arrest of local government unit (LGU) employees and teachers for illegal gambling in Solana. Col. Ariel Quilang, Cagayan Provincial Police Office chief, said some of those caught gambling in Solana hold high positions in the LGU and teachers under the supervision of the Department of Education. Quilang said among the nine suspects were a municipal administrator, a barangay councilman, some teachers and senior citizens. He said police operatives raided the gambling den in Barangay Andarayan South in Solana after the Cagayan provincial intelligence unit gave them the go-signal. “The joint police operative responded to a report coming from the Cagayan provincial intelligence unit and found nine suspects in the house in one of the suspects who is a teacher by profession,” Quilang said. Remember her? Former Singapore actress Zheng Wanling pops up on Instagram with daughter
For those of us who grew up in the 1980s on a diet of SBC dramas like Strange Encounters and On The Fringe, her name is one that brings back nostalgic memories. After marrying a Panamanian diplomat in the late 1990s, local actress Zheng Wanling quit showbiz, moved out of Singapore, and dropped out of the limelight, appearing only in a smattering of Mediacorp shows through the years. But she's popped up again recently on Instagram. Over the last two days, local veteran actresses Aileen Tan and Xiang Yun both posted photos of themselves with Wanling and her daughter Monique, celebrating the latter's 21st birthday. Wanling, who's in her 50s, also turned up in a gathering in January with old friends like actress Jin Yinji and comedian Mark Lee's wife Catherine. Monique, who looks very much like her mum, is currently a Graphics Communication student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. According to an interview Wanling did with Lianhe Zaobao in 2018 , both of them moved ... » Learn More about Remember her? Former Singapore actress Zheng Wanling pops up on Instagram with daughter
At least 18 killed in attacks in Burkina Faso and Mali
OUAGADOUGOU/BAMAKO (Reuters) - Suspected Islamists killed at least 18 people in attacks in northern Burkina Faso and central Mali on Wednesday and Thursday, government and security sources said. Attacks by militants with links to al Qaeda and Islamic State are common in the two West African countries, where Islamists have expanded their reach in recent years despite the presence of 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers and 5,100 French troops. This week Chad announced it would deploy 1,200 troops to the area to complement France's Barkhane counter-terrorism force, as leaders of the five Sahel countries and their allies met to assess the security situation. The attack in Burkina Faso happened on Thursday morning between the towns of Markoye and Tokabangou, where residents were ambushed on their way to a market across the nearby border in Dolbel, Niger, government spokesman Ousseni Tamboura said in a statement. Eight people died and nine were wounded, he said. A security source said that ... » Learn More about At least 18 killed in attacks in Burkina Faso and Mali

Life’s a Bitche for French town censored by Facebook
This French town made Facebook's algorithm blush STRASBOURG (FRANCE) - The French town of Bitche celebrated its return to Facebook on Tuesday, three weeks after censors took down its page, believing the name to be an insult. The mayor of the northeastern town of 5,000 inhabitants, near the border with Germany, said that Facebook took down the page on March 19 on the basis that Bitche was a "violation of the conditions applying to Facebook pages". "Our town's name seems to be have been misinterpreted," mayor Benoit Kieffer said in a statement, suggesting it had been mistaken for the derogatory English term. Bitche, famous for its 17th-century citadel, promptly appealed the ban but its pleas to have its page, which has more than 2,350 followers, reinstated went unanswered for weeks. Desperate to reconnect with residents, the municipality set up another page with the more unobtrusive name of "Mairie 57320" (townhall 57320), after its postal code. The town's campaign to clear ... » Learn More about Life’s a Bitche for French town censored by Facebook
Myanmar coup puts seal on autocracy’s rise in SE Asia
Anti-coup demonstrators, many with signs showing support for a civilian-formed federal army, hold candles and sing protest songs as they sit in the streets of Yangon, Myanmar, on April 3, 2021. (New York Times photos) Late last month, foreign officials in army regalia toasted their hosts in Naypyitaw, the bunkered capital built by Myanmar’s military. Ice clinked in frosted glasses. A lavish spread had been laid out for the foreign dignitaries in honor of Myanmar’s Armed Forces Day. That very day, the military, which had seized power Feb 1, gunned down more than 100 of its own citizens. Far from publicly condemning the brutality, the military representatives from neighbouring countries — India, China, Thailand and Vietnam among them — posed grinning with the generals, legitimizing their putsch. The coup in Myanmar feels like a relic of a Southeast Asian past, when men in uniform roamed a vast dictators’ playground. But it also brings home how a region once celebrated for its ... » Learn More about Myanmar coup puts seal on autocracy’s rise in SE Asia
Solskjaer ‘not conned’ by Son as Man Utd gain revenge on Spurs
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United were sparked into life by the injustice of seeing Edinson Cavani's opening goal controversially ruled out as the Red Devils roared back to beat Tottenham 3-1 on Sunday. United came from behind to win for the ninth time in the league this season as second-half goals from Fred, Cavani and Mason Greenwood cancelled out Son Heung-min's opener. However, Solskjaer still took aim at Son for his role in the goal United had ruled out. Paul Pogba and Cavani combined brilliantly for the Uruguayan to drill the ball low between the legs of Hugo Lloris on 36 minutes. But a VAR review by referee Chris Kavanagh resulted in a Tottenham free-kick for a foul by Scott McTominay on Son in the build-up. The Scottish international made minimal contact with Son's face as he swatted the South Korean aside. "The game is absolutely gone if that's a clear and obvious error," said Solskjaer. "It was a perfectly good goal. I think that kickstarted us, the ... » Learn More about Solskjaer ‘not conned’ by Son as Man Utd gain revenge on Spurs
