Lok Sabha passes bill to extend SC-ST quota in legislatures

· December 10, 2019 ·

New Delhi: Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a Constitution amendment bill to extend reservation to SCs and STs in Lok Sabha and state assemblies by another ten years, with Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asserting that the quota in legislatures was required to build a new political leadership of the two communities. The bill was passed with 352 members voting in favour and none against it. The reservation for SCs, STs and Anglo-Indians given for the past 70 years in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was due to end on January 25, 2020. The reservation for Anglo-Indians in the form of "nomination" is set to expire on January 25 next year as the Bill does not extend the facility to the community. Prasad said the doors are not shut and the matter to grant Anglo-Indians nomination would be considered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the House when members voted for the measure. Since it was a Constitution amendment bill, the voting took place through division. … [Read more...] about Lok Sabha passes bill to extend SC-ST quota in legislatures

Fresh triple talaq bill tabled in Lok Sabha amid uproar by opposition

· June 21, 2019 ·

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government on Friday tabled a fresh triple talaq bill in the Lok Sabha amid uproar by opposition parties. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019 became the first legislation to be tabled in Parliament by the Narendra Modi government in its second term. While the government maintained that the bill was to ensure justice to Muslim women, opposition parties claimed that it was violative of the norms of the Constitution. The table was billed in the Lok Sabha by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who pointed that there were as many as 543 cases of triple talaq reported in the country. According to the minister, there had been 200 instances of triple talaq even after the Supreme Court banned the practice. “This is a question of dignity of women and we are committed to (safeguard) it,” said Prasad. He further said, “Rights of Muslim women will be protected. It is about justice and empowerment of women. Lok Sabha passes Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 ; Amit Shah: There will be NRC

· December 10, 2019 ·

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Monday midnight passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019, with 311 votes for and 80 against. Home minister Amit Shah insisted that the only intention of bringing the bill was to provide refuge to the “persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan”. Shah said: “It’s a humanitarian issue, beyond political ideologies.” He asserted that the legislation will not in any manner affect the minority communities in India. “The Muslims in India have nothing to fear, they will continue to live peacefully,” he said. On whether CAB was intended to make a background for nationwide NRC, Shah said: “There will be NRC. For that there is no need for any background as BJP’s election manifesto promise is enough. Once NRC is implemented, we will ensure no infiltrator remains in the country.” Shah also announced the inclusion of Manipur in the Inner Line Permit areas.
