By Amy Pataki Restaurant Critic Thu., June 7, 2018 Nothing tells Dad you love him like a butter fountain. That’s what Longo’s is promoting for Father’s Day on June 17. The supermarket chain is offering a $500 prize of New Brunswick lobsters with an endless flow of butter sauce from a repurposed chocolate fountain. The home-dining prize, part of Lobsterfest June 15 and 16, can be won through a social media contest www.butterfountain.com with the hashtag ButterDadUp. It is not sold in stores. There are so many things wrong with a butter fountain. Article Continued Below First of all, the colour. This butter is as white as milk. That’s because Longo’s mixes cream and fish stock into the burbling butterfat. Secondly, as important as butter is to many cuisines, it is not fountain worthy. Chocolate is. So is champagne. Even a nacho cheese fountain at a quirky wedding is understandable. But mass quantities of melted butter … [Read more...] about Longo’s has a butter fountain for Father’s Day. Grocery shoppers alarmed by purse-snatching scam at Richmond Hill, Aurora and Milton Longo’s
By Kim Zarzour Aurora Banner Fri., April 20, 2018 Have the “Longo’s lifters” been hitting stores across the GTA? Shortly after an Aurora woman shared her story of her purse being stolen at the local grocery store April 14, another Longo’s shopper, this time in Richmond Hill, said her purse was nearly lifted in the same way at her local Longo’s earlier that afternoon. And on April 10, police in Milton sent out a release, along with photos, of purse-snatching culprits in a Longo’s at that location. In this case, witnesses appear to have scared off the suspects. Anne Marie, the Aurora shopper, was shocked to see photos released by police of the Milton suspects. Two of the men, she said, looked exactly like the ones who bumped into her and told her that fire was coming from her car last Saturday afternoon in Aurora. By Carolyn Evans Hammond Special to the Star Fri., Feb. 23, 2018 It’s freezing out. You’re busy. And you need to restock the fridge and wine rack, pronto. Sounds like a job for Grocery Gateway/Longos. So far, it’s the only GTA supermarket that lets you shop for food and wine online, and they’ll deliver it straight to your door for a $10 fee. Then, it glides over the palate with understated notes of cool apricot and lemon that … [Read more...] about Delicious wines you can get delivered to your doorstep
Fresh Bites: Baby eggplants — with a few Indian spices — will keep you warm on a cold winter’s night
Before moving to Toronto in 1990, Patricia Rodrigues had never seen the big fat eggplant so common in our supermarkets.Growing up in Tanzania, she and her family prepared fragrant Indian curries with glossy purple eggplant not much bigger than a golf ball. When she tried to replicate them in her Toronto kitchen, however, Rodrigues was dismayed to find her dishes turned to mush when she used our monster American eggplant, which releases more liquid than the Indian variety. “I like the small ones because they stay firm and have more flavour than the large ones,” says Rodrigues, an administrative co-ordinator for the TTC, who’s always cooking up a storm for her family and colleagues.Fortunately, this small eggplant has become more readily available in the last few years, showing up in No Frills stores, even Longo’s. Rodrigues also finds them in South Asian and Chinese stores. … [Read more...] about Fresh Bites: Baby eggplants — with a few Indian spices — will keep you warm on a cold winter’s night
