Over the past decade, I have addressed many questions about the building blocks of journalism: impartiality, balance, fairness, accuracy and commitment to truth. While readers tend to agree with most of my readings, one area where I fail to convince many of them is the vexatious question of bias. Loss of trust: On the trust vote in Puducherry
The month-long political instability in Puducherry has ended with the resignation of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Monday after he failed to prove his majority on the floor of the House. Though the fall of his government appeared imminent a few days ago, the way in which the political events played out highlighted the limits of the constitutional provisions to discourage defection of elected legislators. Not long ago, the Narayanasamy Ministry had a comfortable majority with 19 members in the 33-member Assembly. The disqualification of a Congress MLA in July last year did not make any difference to the situation. But, in the last one month, six MLAs from the Congress-DMK combine quit the House. Among them were two Ministers and a couple of MLAs who gave up their seats just a day before the floor test. Two of those who quit the Assembly have since joined the BJP. Under the changed circumstances, the non-Congress front, comprising the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), the AIADMK and ... » Learn More about Loss of trust: On the trust vote in Puducherry

Next S Saraswathi B lame it on stressful jobs, the high cost of living or mere ignorance thanks to an urban upbringing, but a majority of people seem to have forgotten the significance of rituals followed during Diwali. I f you are wondering why India is considered the land of festivals, here’s proof: Barely two weeks ago, we celebrated the 10-day long Navratri festival and Bakri Eid. In September, we celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi, which also lasts 10 days. In the last week of August, we celebrated Janmashtami. In the last couple of months, we have also celebrated Onam, Raksha Bandhan, Parsi New Year and Eid-Ul-Fitr. Now, Diwali is here! Sadly, the festival of lights seems to be sneaking up on us rather quietly this year. With just a few days to go, one is missing the frenzied excitement and activity that is part and parcel of this festival, which is considered the harbinger of happiness and good cheer. Maybe it is our stressful jobs or the high ... » Learn More about Has Diwali lost its charm?

Refugees are the heroes in Paro Anand’s ‘Nomad’s Land’
It is a sunny winter afternoon in Delhi and Paro Anand is lounging with her three dogs. “They are rescues — two Alsatians and a ‘raasta’” says the writer of books for children and young adults over phone as she shushes their barking.Paro’s stories, however, are often set in worlds far away from that idyllic afternoon. She has written about hope and horror in equal measure, traversing more often than not the worlds of terrorism, sexual abuse, domestic violence and Indian childhoods with rare sensitivity. Her telling of stories on a patchwork of lives has led to some of her books being barred in a few school libraries, but earned her the Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar in 2017. She went on to head the National Centre for Children’s Literature, The National Book Trust, India, the apex body for children’s literature in the country. Paro’s fearless telling of the world, as she sees it, comes from an eclectic childhood spent ... » Learn More about Refugees are the heroes in Paro Anand’s ‘Nomad’s Land’
