Want to shed those extra kilos? Consume nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, walnuts and peanuts as part of your diet as these can help you reduce weight as well as lower the risk of becoming overweight and obese, researchers say.The findings showed that people who ate who ate nuts not only had less weight gain than their nut-abstaining peers, but they also enjoyed a 5 % lower risk of becoming overweight or obese. Many people have historically assumed that nuts - an energy-dense, high-fat food - are not a good choice for individuals who want to lose weight. The findings, however, contradict that assumption, said Joan Sabate, director at the Loma Linda University in California, US.“The study confirms that nuts are not an obesogenic food,” Sabate added, in the paper published in the European Journal of Nutrition. Further, the researchers found that nuts are a rich source of energy, good fats, protein, vitamins, minerals and … [Read more...] about Go nutty: Eating nuts can help you reduce weight and lower obesity risk

A wealth-creation idea whose time has come: credit risk fund
By Sachin Jain In our quest to make better returns, we often get this thought: I wish I had the advantage of hindsight. Looking back at the last decade, an investor would wish he/she was in cash in 2008, remained fully invested in equities – preferable largecaps – in 2009, moved out to real estate in 2013, shifted to midcaps/smallcaps during 2014-2017 and moved out to gilt funds in 2019. If one would have done all of that, then the kind of returns accrued would have been phenomenal. However, mutual fund industry figures reflect a completely opposite trend. Why is it so? One of the key factors is the over-emphasis on past performance and our inability to book profit in a trending market. The learning is that it is difficult to invest in an asset class when it is out of favour. As investors, we tend to succumb to herd mentality. For example: There was increased allocation to bond (duration) funds in early 2013 before RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan spoiled the party. When it … [Read more...] about A wealth-creation idea whose time has come: credit risk fund

Study shows a new type of diabetes drug may cut heart failure risk by 34%
LONDON: The new type of drugs for type 2 diabetes - SGLT2 inhibitors - are associated with a reduced risk of heart failure by 34 per cent, researchers said. The new SGLT2 inhibitors, which are now a commonly used drug group, reduce blood glucose, they added. In the study published in the journal The BMJ, the researchers wanted to show if there were positive cardiovascular effects from SGLT2 inhibitors in a broader patient group. "There is cardiovascular benefit from SGLT2 inhibitors for a broader patient group in routine clinical care. This is an important result that we believe may be of interest to patients as well as drug authorities and doctors," said study principal investigator Bjorn Pasternak, Associate Professor at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The researchers used several national registries containing data on drug use, diseases, cause of death and other data from close to 21,000 patients with type 2 diabetes who began treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors between April … [Read more...] about Study shows a new type of diabetes drug may cut heart failure risk by 34%
RBI unlikely to grant India Inc’s wish for lower rates
Pressure has been mounting on the Reserve Bank of India to cut interest rates in the wake of declining retail inflation and the need to fuel growth momentum. However, the RBI will have to do a tightrope walk as globally interest rates are inching upwards. The Reserve Bank is unlikely to yield to the India Inc’s pressure for a benign monetary policy stance by keeping policy rates unchanged in its first monetary policy review of 2018-19 to be announced on Thursday against the backdrop of hardening global crude oil prices. This would also be the first monetary policy announcement after the Budget, which has slightly deviated from the fiscal consolidation roadmap. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee, headed by RBI Governor Urjit Patel, is to meet on April 4 and 5. Pressure has been mounting on the Reserve Bank of India to cut interest rates in the wake of declining retail inflation and the need to fuel growth momentum.
