An opulent, carefully restored, 18th-century castle in Ireland has been named the hotel of the year by experts at luxury travel network Virtuoso. At the group’s 2018 best of the best awards held recently in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States, Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland took the night’s top honor of hotel of the year, a title which recognizes “an iconic hotel that epitomizes excellence in luxury hospitality and acts as a positive change in the community”. The win comes just a year after Adare Manor’s reopening, following a painstaking 21-month restoration process that involved 670 construction workers, craftspeople and artisans who were tasked with adding a new 42-room wing to the castle. The manor now features 104 rooms in total. Other new additions include a ballroom with a capacity of 350 guests for weddings, meetings and events, a remodelled on-site golf course, and the opening of The Carriage House Restaurant, Terrace and Bar which … [Read more...] about Ireland castle chosen as this year’s best luxury hotel

Owner of luxury hotels is looking for a buyer after years of spurning offers
By Craig Karmin The Wall Street Journal Tues., Aug. 14, 2018 A London-based company that owns and operates dozens of famous hotels, from the Cipriani in Venice to the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, is up for sale after years of rebuffing its many suitors. By Shinan Govani Star Columnist Fri., March 23, 2018 Was César Ritz the first “influencer,” as goes the sobriquet these days? A merchant of dreams during the final gasp of the Victorian age, he was not only the sirer of a new cosmopolitanism, as depicted in a saucy just-out double-biography Ritz & Escoffier: The Hotelier, The Chef, and the Rise of the Leisure Class, but also the harbinger of something we almost take for granted now: hotels as “lifestyle” and food as pop culture. Long before Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck fast-tracked the arrival of “boutique hotels,” or an eager Isadore Sharp unwrapped the Four Seasons brand in Toronto, or the merger irretrievably gelling between lodging and the worlds of fashion and film (Versace and Armani, say, putting their names on hotels or feverish director Baz Luhrmann being recruited to do the creative on the buzzy Faena Hotel in Miami Beach), there was César Ritz. … [Read more...] about Long before Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck, Cesar Ritz lent lustre to a luxury hotel
