Vincent Kompany announced Sunday that he will leave Manchester City after 11 trophy-laden years to become player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgian defender Kompany joined City in 2008 and made 360 appearances, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields. The 33-year-old signed off with victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday, where the club captain lifted the trophy after City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble. "As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out," Kompany said. "I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club." Anderlecht is the Belgian club where Kompany began his professional career before joining Hamburg and he admitted he is relishing the chance to move into management. "I choose to be grateful for the past but remain ambitious and driven for the future. For the next three years, I will … [Read more...] about Man City’s ‘beating heart’ Kompany to leave club

BRIGHTON, United Kingdom: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (pix) wants his side to embrace the “privilege” of being in pole position to retain the Premier League title when they travel to Brighton on Sunday. City go into the final day of the season one point ahead of Liverpool after a title race that has raised the bar from anything the Premier League has seen before. Liverpool’s long wait to win the title could unbelievably stretch into its 30th year despite posting the third highest points tally in Premier League history. With victory on England’s south coast on Sunday, City will hit 98 points, two less than their record-breaking campaign last season, but arguably even more impressive having come from seven points behind in January and refusing to budge in a 13-game winning run as the finishing line approaches. “It’s a privilege,“ said Guardiola on Friday. “Is a dream to be here, honestly I didn’t expect months ago when we … [Read more...] about Pressure is a privilege as Man City look to close out title
Defending champions City have the upper hand as they lead by a point knowing they only have to match Liverpool's result to become the first side in a decade to retain the title. Liverpool have not lifted the league since 1990, but could not have done much more to finally end that wait after posting a club record 94 points with one game to spare. Incredibly the Reds could post the third highest points tally ever in the Premier League with victory against Wolves and still miss out. "Both teams deserve the title. But it can be just one. The team that is going to lose can't have regrets because they have given everything," said City boss Pep Guardiola. Statistically this is the greatest Premier League title race of all-time, but AFP Sports looks at what rivals it for drama from the history books. 2011/12 - Aguero snatches the title It is rare for the title to be won on the final day, even rarer to do it in the final minute of stoppage time in the final game. Should City seal … [Read more...] about Man City v Liverpool: The best ever English title race?
Vincent Kompany makes Manchester City easier to love. That's a remarkable achievement because the title favourites are not easy to love. The Reds are. They have the history, the heartache and the 29-year-old monkey that clings to the back of every Merseyside martyr. Even City boss Pep Guardiola acknowledged this difference, accusing the media of pro-Liverpool coverage in a mildly petulant outburst. The Spaniard has a point. Apart from the Liverpool haters, who really wants City to prevail for a second season in a row? They are building an empire with enough petrodollars to sink the opposition for years to come. But they also have Kompany. He improves City's likeability. He makes the prospect of one club dominating domestic football almost palatable. Nothing about his success feels bought or entitled. Everything is earned. City's skipper leads as if that armband was tattooed to his bicep at birth. He scored as City pipped Leicester City 1-0 yesterday (Singapore time), smashing the … [Read more...] about Neil Humphreys: Man City in exalted Kompany
City were heading for a frustrating evening at the Etihad Stadium on Monday until Kompany let fly with a 25-yard shot into the top corner 20 minutes from time -- the centre-back's first City goal from outside the box. Victory saw City go top by a point from Liverpool heading into Sunday's last round of league matches. "I hadn't scored this season but I always feel in big moments that I'm going to do something," Kompany told Sky Sports. "Today was a little bit of frustration, everyone was saying 'don't shoot, don't shoot' and I could really hear it; I thought hold on a second, I've not come this far in my career for young players to tell me if I can take a shot, and I just had a go!" The Belgian last hit the target from outside the area back in 2007 but Kompany insisted: "I've scored goals like that in training! "It's 15 years I've been in top-level football, midfielders telling me 'don't shoot, play the ball wide' and every time they miss, for 15 years I've been saying 'I … [Read more...] about Goal hero Kompany makes good on promise as Man City go top again
