MANILA – Most, if not all hotels in the Philippines have their own in-house Chinese restaurant. It’s imperative not only because of Chinese guests, but also because Chinese is a global cuisine and most travelers are familiar with its flavors. And Filipinos in general love Chinese food, which is part and parcel of the country’s cuisine. These are among the reasons why business and leisure hotel Seda Vertis North in Quezon City decided to put up its own Chinese restaurant two years since it opened. “A lot of our guests, 70 to 80 percent, particularly on the weekend are Filipino-Chinese. It kind of showed that there’s a need in the market for just good Chinese food at a really good value. And that’s what we’re trying to go in with,” explained Seda Vertis North group general manager Brett Patrick Hickey. The restaurant is at its finishing stages and will soon open to the public. The hotel hired Cantonese chef Hann Furn Chen to head the … [Read more...] about QC eats: Seda Vertis North set to open Chinese restaurant
When my editor asked me to review the Wyndham Grand Yangon Hotel, on the corner of Kan Yeik Thar and U Aung Myat Road, I accepted. It was not the worst assignment. I gladly took up the offer and invited my mother, a travel buff herself, to escape from home for an all inclusive weekend vacation. The contemporary 20-storey hotel emerges from the shores of Kandawgyi Lake. It was designed by the renowned architecture and interior design firm HASSEL. The hotel is located within Kantharyar centre, a city-wide complex that includes state-of the-art office spaces, a shopping centre, serviced luxury apartments and the hotel. The shopping centre offers guests some of Yangon’s best shopping outlets, dining and entertainment facilities. In addition, guests can also enjoy cafes, fashion boutiques, a spa, beauty salon, fitness club, grocery shops and a cinema. Your reviewer stayed in a deluxe room on the 9th floor. As soon as we unpacked, my mother dragged a chair over to the glass … [Read more...] about A night at Wyndham Grand Yangon hotel

MANILA, Philippines — In what is touted to be the biggest Mango Sago ever made, roughly 150 kilos of ripe mangoes were used to make this record-breaking sweet and tangy, creamy dessert. “We removed and balled the flesh at the center of the fruit,” said chef Richard Hao, who, together with his culinary students from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, prepared the popular summer cooler. “We scraped the pulp from the seed, pureed and mixed this with condensed milk, all-purpose cream and powdered sugar. We then added big balls of sago to the mix, which looked better in the kawa than the usual tiny tapioca pearls.” The kawa, or large cauldron that they used, was four feet deep and six feet in diameter.
