Aus passes law: Google, Fb must pay for news
Changes to News Media Bargaining Code cleared CANBERRA Australia’s laws forcing Google and Facebook to pay for news are ready to take effect, though the laws’ architect said it will take time for the digital giants to strike media deals . The Parliament on Thursday passed amendments to the so-called News Media Bargaining Code agreed between Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday. In return for the changes, Facebook agreed to lift a ban on Australians accessing and sharing news. Rod Sims, the competition regulator who drafted the code, said he was happy that the amended legislation would address the market imbalance between Australian news publishers and the two gateways to the internet. Google has already struck deals with major Australian news businesses in recent weeks including News Corp and Seven West Media. Freeport eyes U.S. expansions as Biden’s EV plan boosts copper demand
Freeport-McMoRan Inc is set to approve expansions at several of its U.S. copper mines to capitalize on surging demand for the red metal as President Joe Biden moves to electrify the nation's automobiles and combat climate change , Chief Executive Richard Adkerson told Reuters. The expansions would be a major bet on the U.S. economy - one of the company's largest markets - and also on the rising demand for electric vehicles (EVs), which use twice as much copper as internal combustion engines. Adkerson also said he has no desire to combine Freeport with Barrick Gold Corp or another gold producer and is working to give COVID-19 vaccines to about 25,000 workers at the Grasberg copper mine in Indonesia, which Freeport owns with that country's government. He also is aiming to double the size of the company's board of directors. Phoenix-based Freeport already produces more than 1 billion pounds of copper each year in the United States, little of which is exported. NHAI chief pitches for internal mechanism by consulting engineers to come out with quality projects
National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) Chairman Sukhbir Singh Sandhu on Friday said low quotes for some projects have created suspicion over their quality. Consulting engineers need self-introspection for improving quality of infrastructure projects and to ensure their timely completion, Sandhu said expressing concerns over quality and delays in various highway projects. Sandhu was addressing a webinar on 'Contribution of consultants for fast tracking Atmanirbhar Bharat' organised by the Consulting Engineers Association of India (CEAI), the country's apex body of consultant engineers, to mark its Diamond jubilee celebrations. "NHAI had to unwillingly take some harsh steps against consultants for poor-quality work. An internal mechanism is needed by consultants for quality improvement," Sandhu said. Some of the quotes received by NHAI for various projects are so low that one wonders about the provisions for salary of the workers, and quality of work comes under doubt, he ... » Learn More about NHAI chief pitches for internal mechanism by consulting engineers to come out with quality projects

(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.) Hyundai Motor has so far avoided a chip shortage that has plagued global automakers, largely maintaining its stockpile of chips last year and even accelerating purchases towards the end, three people with knowledge of the matter said. The shortage has forced production cuts worldwide, including at Volkswagen and General Motors , prompting Germany and the United States to ramp up efforts to resolve the shortage. Other than Japan's Toyota Motor, which said this month it had enough chip inventory to last it about four months, Hyundai and its sister firm Kia Corp are the only global automakers to have maintained a stockpile of low-tech chips that helped them keep up production. If it doesn't ease soon, though, the shortage could hit Hyundai too, as tight capacity on factory floors starts pressuring production of even high-tech auto chips, said two of ... » Learn More about Hyundai bought chips when rivals didn’t; its assembly lines are still rolling
