KLCI closes off day’s low but broader market weak

KUALA LUMPUR: Some fund buying of key blue chips including Sime Darby and Top Glove helped the FBM KLCI close off the day’s low on Friday but the broader market was weak in line with the cautious key Asian markets. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI was down 1.8 points or 0.11% to 1,626.19. Turnover was 9.04 billion shares valued at RM5.79bil. The broader market weakened with 787 losers to 347 gainers and 417 counters unchanged. Chinese equities ended lower, marking a weekly loss of 1.4%, after a rough start to China-US bilateral talks prompted heavy selling as risk sentiment soured, Reuters reported. At the close, the Shanghai Composite index was down 1.69% at 3,404.66, while the blue-chip CSI300 index closed 2.62% lower. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was down 1.41%, at 28,990.94. The Hang Seng China Enterprises index fell 1.63% to 11,283.92. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.41%, Taiwan’s Taiex 1.34% and Singapore’s Straits Times Index 0.1% lower. BANGKOK, March 20 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Another 1,006 people at risk of contracting Covid-19 in Bang Khae district were given the Sinovac vaccine, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said. The vaccine drive started on Wednesday after the BMA established a mobile vaccination unit in Sirisetthanont Market in Bang Khae district, which is a hotspot of recent cluster cases. The Public Health Ministry and BMA aim to inoculate 6,000 people facing the risk of infection by March 21. Chawin Sirinak, BMA’s deputy permanent secretary, said 1,006 of the 1,025 registrants were vaccinated on Friday (March 19) and 19 people did not get the jab either due to physical condition or a change of mind. So far, the BMA has vaccinated 2,672 people in the Bang Khae area. McCollum, Lillard carry Blazers past Mavericks

PORTLAND, Oregon: CJ McCollum scored 32 points, Damian Lillard had 31 and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Dallas Mavericks, 125-119, on Friday (Saturday in Manila). The All-Stars for each team, Lillard and Luka Doncic (38 points, nine rebounds, eight assists) both had big nights. But Lillard had much more help from his co-star as Kristaps Porzingis finished with just 11 points and didn’t make a field goal until the early third quarter. “That was my ninth time playing basketball since January 16th,” McCollum said after his best game since returning from a broken foot. “It’s hard to find a rhythm in a season like this. I was on a minutes restriction, I was rushing, I wasn’t playing with pace. I kind of settled in today. I got 23 shots up in 28 minutes.” The teams meet again Sunday (Monday in Manila), when Dallas will look for more from Porzingis, its second-leading scorer. “He got off to a slow start and we have just got to involve him a little bit more,” coach Rick ... » Learn More about McCollum, Lillard carry Blazers past Mavericks

Can Raya and the Last Dragon help Disney capture Southeast Asian streaming prize?

As an ever greater number of Southeast Asians become transfixed by video streaming services, the region of 650 million people has become a battleground between home-grown platforms and competitors from the West and China. In the past year, China’s streaming behemoths, Tencent’s WeTV and Baidu-backed iQIYI, have ramped up efforts to expand in Southeast Asia, following in the footsteps of their Western counterparts Netflix , Walt Disney, and WarnerMedia’s HBO. Tencent , for example, acquired regional streaming platform iflix in June as a way to expand its own WeTV service in the region. “After acquiring iflix, Tencent’s WeTV is now present in 13 countries in the area. Meanwhile, Baidu’s iQiyi has been opening local offices in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines , and Indonesia and has invested in local content, a major driver of viewership in this area,” said Ophélie Boucaud, research analyst at digital industries research firm Dataxis. “The potential of this area is of strategic ... » Learn More about Can Raya and the Last Dragon help Disney capture Southeast Asian streaming prize?

Monk wins 18 million baht in lottery, donates money to temple

A monk won 18 million baht in the recent lottery and decided to donate the winnings. 67 year old Montri Samajjo, known as Monk Piak, says he didn’t buy the tickets with the hopes of winning. He bought them because a lottery ticket seller came by temple asking for help. The monk gave 1 million baht to each of his 3 children. He donated a portion of the winnings to the temple as well as to those who needed money. He saved the rest to help people who may need it in the future. Many Thais are superstitious when it comes to buying lottery tickets. Random occurrences in life, or even dreams, can led people into buying lottery tickets with specific numbers. Thai media reported that the monk had a strange dream where he was touching an old coffin. The monk says a lottery ticket seller came by the Wat Thinnakorn Nimit in Nonthaburi, just outside Bangkok, and said he needed help. He couldn’t sell all of the tickets and needed money. The monk borrowed some money from another monk at the ... » Learn More about Monk wins 18 million baht in lottery, donates money to temple

The government started human trials on Monday of a domestically developed coronavirus vaccine and expects to deploy it next year, which its health minister said could give the country more freedom with its vaccine policy. The vaccination drive is targeting the inoculation of half the adult population by the end of the year using 61 million doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine, which will be locally produced from June.
