SINGAPORE - There has been a spike in demand for food supplies from residents whose incomes have been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic , resulting in a dwindling stockpile of these rations at Jamiyah Singapore's food bank. The number of families who sought food ration assistance from Jamiyah Food Bank surged 79 per cent year on year to 866 in December last year, and climbed further to 920 as at last month. Mr Jaffar Mydin, secretary-general and chief operating officer of Jamiyah Singapore, foresees that more families will need food rations this year despite prospects of economic recovery. "While the economy is slowly starting to recover from the pandemic, it will take some time before our beneficiaries are able to secure a job fitting to their qualifications and skills," he told The Straits Times. He added that the transition back to pre-pandemic conditions remains uncertain. "At Jamiyah, we assist our beneficiaries in finding financial stability and no longer needing food ... » Learn More about Jamiyah Singapore calls for food donations as demand for aid spikes during Covid-19 pandemic

Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano
Sunday hikers watch the lava flowing from the erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano. FAGRADALSFJALL, Iceland: Thousands of curious onlookers have flocked to an erupting volcano in Iceland to marvel at the hypnotic display of glowing red lava, the bravest of them grilling hot dogs and marshmallows over the smoldering embers. The eruption of a fissure near Mount Fagradalsfjall, which began late Friday, was the first in the same volcanic system in about 900 years. The volcano is located only about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik and can be reached after a 90-minute hike from the nearest road. "It's absolutely breathtaking," says Ulvar Kari Johannsson, a 21-year-old engineer who spent his Sunday visiting the scene. "It smells pretty bad. For me what was surprising was the colours of the orange: much, much deeper than what one would expect," he tells AFP. The incandescent lava bubbles and spurts from a small cone in the Geldingadalur valley, piling up in the basin ... » Learn More about Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano

The growing shortage of pork supply as a result of the African swine fever (ASF) has triggered a heated debate on the reduction of tariffs and the increase in the minimum access volume (MAV) in-quota (with lower tariffs) on imported pork proposed by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). Both measures are envisaged by the government to plug the supply gap, check the rising pork prices, tame the inflation rate (as meat price is pushing up food inflation), and assist Filipino consumers who are reeling from the twin problems of diminishing income (as a result of rising unemployment) and spiking prices of food commodities. The local hog raisers and their supporters, particularly in the Senate, are up in arms against the DA and NEDA proposals because they feel these will aggravate the suffering of the local hog industry. Their arguments against the proposals can be summarized as follows: – The proposed reduction of tariffs on imported ... » Learn More about Economics out; Politics in

Chinese noodles not the inspiration for pasta, historians say
Pasta is Italy’s staple food, but it’s not only Italians who indulge in platefuls of the doughy concoction every day. People all over the world adore it. It comes in more than 300 shapes: long, as in spaghetti; flat, as in fettuccine; hollow (bucatini); short, as in penne; the butterfly-shaped farfalle and ear-shaped orecchiette; tubular (rigatoni); and stuffed, in varieties such as tortellini and ravioli. It can be bought dry or freshly made from egg-based dough. World Pasta Day, held each October , celebrates the universal love of this staple of the Mediterranean diet. But who invented pasta? Legend has it that spaghetti is descended from noodles , based on the premise that Venetian nobleman and merchant Marco Polo imported long, worm-like strands of the latter to Italy from China in the late 13th century. To many, though, the Chinese origins of Italian pasta are a myth. It is true that Marco Polo did spend several years in China, learning the country’s traditions and ... » Learn More about Chinese noodles not the inspiration for pasta, historians say
