SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A global shortage of chips that has rattled production lines at car companies and squeezed stockpiles at gadget makers, is now leaving home appliance makers unable to meet demand, according to the president of Whirlpool Corp in China. The U.S. based company, one of the world's largest white goods firm, is falling behind on exports to Europe and the United States from China, by as much as 25% on some months, Jason Ai told Reuters in Shanghai. "It's a perfect storm," he said on the sidelines of the Appliance and World Electronics Expo. "On the one hand we have to satisfy domestic demand for appliances, on the other hand we're facing an explosion of export orders. As far as chips go, for those of us in China, it was inevitable." The company has struggled to secure enough microcontrollers, simple processors that power over half of its products including microwaves, refrigerators, and washing machines. I tried working at Teo Heng for $4/hour and it was slightly disappointing — here’s why
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and like many Singaporeans, that is how I feel about Teo Heng. The KTV studio, known for its affordable prices, is a place that many 80s and 90s kids would flock to belt out tune after tune. Unfortunately, the pandemic has been giving Teo Heng a pretty hard time and the family business has been struggling to stay afloat. In addition, the pilot programme to reopen nightclubs and karaoke outlets has been put on hold , so it unlikely that singing will be allowed in karaoke joints anytime soon. Despite these uncertainties, Teo Heng has tried to make the best out of the situation by leasing out their rooms for other uses. Starting from today (March 19), guests will be allowed to book rooms at their Causeway Point and Bedok Point outlets to, as they say, "work, dine & chill". Their third outlet at JCube is slated to reopen on a later date so Westies can keep a watch out for that. Curious to see how this will be like, I ... » Learn More about I tried working at Teo Heng for $4/hour and it was slightly disappointing — here’s why

Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano
Sunday hikers watch the lava flowing from the erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano. FAGRADALSFJALL, Iceland: Thousands of curious onlookers have flocked to an erupting volcano in Iceland to marvel at the hypnotic display of glowing red lava, the bravest of them grilling hot dogs and marshmallows over the smoldering embers. The eruption of a fissure near Mount Fagradalsfjall, which began late Friday, was the first in the same volcanic system in about 900 years. The volcano is located only about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik and can be reached after a 90-minute hike from the nearest road. "It's absolutely breathtaking," says Ulvar Kari Johannsson, a 21-year-old engineer who spent his Sunday visiting the scene. "It smells pretty bad. For me what was surprising was the colours of the orange: much, much deeper than what one would expect," he tells AFP. The incandescent lava bubbles and spurts from a small cone in the Geldingadalur valley, piling up in the basin ... » Learn More about Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano
Common causes of kitchen fires and how to stop them
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) lists electrical connections and open flames as two of the country’s most common causes of fires. And in the kitchen where food is cooked over fire, electrical appliances stand in every corner, and gas leaks can happen, it’s easy to see how the area can be hazardous. While the most resonating lesson growing up is that fire can be put out with water, you’re about to learn this Fire Prevention Month that this isn’t always the case. Electrical fires happen inside appliances — microwave ovens, toasters and the like. In this case, keep the appliance door closed and cut off the fuel source, which means unplug the appliance. It goes without saying that since electricity is invloved, don’t use conductors like water to extinguish the fire. Also, have the appliance checked and repaired before attempting to use it again. The fire may have damaged some parts and made it more dangerous. To prevent electrical fires, make sure that your appliances are ... » Learn More about Common causes of kitchen fires and how to stop them

Seized luxury yacht to be auctioned
PHUKET TOWN: A luxury motor yacht, which was seized when its Singaporean owner failed to pay import duty, is to be auctioned on March 20 at Phuket Customs Region 5 on Phuket Rd. The yacht’s owner kept it more than six months in Phuket without paying the crushing import duty of about 200%. The yacht, a Sealine T46 built in Britain two years ago, is 46 feet long. It is powered by two Volvo Penta engines, giving it a top speed of 31 knots. It has two double berths, each with an ensuite bathroom, two lounge areas, a galley, and controls both below deck and on the fly bridge. Additional equipment includes radar, satellite communications and navigation, two refrigerators, a TV, an ice machine and a microwave oven. Pol Maj Prasert Srikunnarat, inspector of Phuket Marine Police, told the Gazette that the yacht was seized in Chalong on November 22. “We still have seven more yachts seized since then. These will be auctioned one at a time,” he added. The reserve price for the Sealine is 5.5 ... » Learn More about Seized luxury yacht to be auctioned
Chip charge: Chinese phone, car, home appliance companies join semiconductor rush
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Smartphone maker Xiaomi has joined a rush of Chinese tech companies venturing into the semiconductor sector, announcing on Wednesday a new chip to help smartphone cameras process images. Xiaomi's Surge C1 chip was developed after an earlier unsuccessful attempt at producing a smartphone processor and comes as Chinese internet giants, automakers, and even home appliance firms invest heavily in semiconductor research and development. While all remain in the early stages, their drive dovetails with Chinese government policy to boost the domestic semiconductor sector as demand for chips soars. The initiative has become ever-more critical, with a global chip shortage crimping supplies and U.S. sanctions hobbling Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, once China's top smartphone maker and for a time the only company capable of producing high-end smartphone processors. The trend is a global one, with major U.S companies including Alphabet Inc's Google, Amazon.com Inc and ... » Learn More about Chip charge: Chinese phone, car, home appliance companies join semiconductor rush

Perfect centre of attraction
CHOCOLATE lava cake was immensely popular in the US in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, when chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten claimed that he accidentally underbaked chocolate sponge cake. Although runny, he found that it had good taste and texture. However, French chocolatier Jacques Torres claimed that the dish had already existed in France. Regardless of who had invented this dessert, it has become a regular feature in many high-end restaurants all over the world. There are several versions of this dish, with slight differences in the recipe to achieve the liquid centre. The most obvious variation is molten chocolate cake, which requires a separate piece of chocolate ganache to be inserted into the batter before baking. Another similar confection is chocolate fondant, which is almost like a baked chocolate ganache that melts on the palate and not on the plate. To make sure that the cakes do not puff up and then collapse when they leave the oven, do not overbeat ... » Learn More about Perfect centre of attraction
