Opposition party threatened with boycott over comments about “haircut” teacher
The president of The Association of Secondary School Administrators says the group will boycott the Kao Klai party unless one of its members apologises for comments he made about the teacher at the centre of the “ugly haircut” debacle. In a report in Thai PBS World, Ratchachai Sornsuwan calls Wirote Lakhana-adisorn’s comments offensive and demands an apology. The MP has said that the teacher, who is accused of humiliating a pupil by forcing her to undergo a botched haircut, should resign and think of himself as a criminal. Ratchachai agrees the teacher should be disciplined for his actions but says the association considers him an excellent teacher who cares about his students. He adds that if a public apology is not forthcoming from the Kao Klai politician, the association will boycott his party. For his part, Wirote has taken to Twitter to double down on his stance. The MP says he cannot talk about education in Thailand if he is not permitted to protect pupils from intimidation ... » Learn More about Opposition party threatened with boycott over comments about “haircut” teacher
Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano
Sunday hikers watch the lava flowing from the erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano. FAGRADALSFJALL, Iceland: Thousands of curious onlookers have flocked to an erupting volcano in Iceland to marvel at the hypnotic display of glowing red lava, the bravest of them grilling hot dogs and marshmallows over the smoldering embers. The eruption of a fissure near Mount Fagradalsfjall, which began late Friday, was the first in the same volcanic system in about 900 years. The volcano is located only about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik and can be reached after a 90-minute hike from the nearest road. "It's absolutely breathtaking," says Ulvar Kari Johannsson, a 21-year-old engineer who spent his Sunday visiting the scene. "It smells pretty bad. For me what was surprising was the colours of the orange: much, much deeper than what one would expect," he tells AFP. The incandescent lava bubbles and spurts from a small cone in the Geldingadalur valley, piling up in the basin ... » Learn More about Thousands flock to Iceland’s erupting volcano
Cambodian agriculture bank seeks US$30mil for SME loans
PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/ANN): Agriculture and Rural Development Bank of Cambodia (ARDB) expects to receive an additional US$30 million from the government for special-purpose loans to keep the Kingdom’s smaller businesses afloat amid the ongoing economic duress of Covid-19, according to the state-owned bank’s director-general Kao Thach. Thach told The Post on March 22 that ARDB recently submitted a request to the government for the additional funds after the bank earlier this year finished disbursing $50 million that was supplied by state coffers in 2020. He noted that fruit and vegetable growers, livestock farmers and aquaculturists received the bulk of the $50 million and put in steadily-increasing numbers of loan applications to increase their cultivation and expand their businesses. “We’ve asked for an additional $30 million as there is growing demand. We’ll continue to encourage farmers who need more capital to contact ARDB for these loans, ” Thach said. Propping ... » Learn More about Cambodian agriculture bank seeks US$30mil for SME loans
‘Can’t afford then don’t eat’: Restaurant and customer squabble over coupon redemption
A restaurant and a customer recently got into a heated argument after the latter was allegedly told if she " can't afford then don't eat ". The reason for this? She bought a set meal coupon meant for four diners and wanted to bring two extra children along. The woman had purchased the coupon, which offered a discounted price of $59.68 instead of the usual price of $116 at San Guo Kao Yu, through Fave . As the coupon did not indicate that only four people could use the deal, the woman wanted to make a booking for four adults and two kids, reported 8World . When she called the restaurant on March 19, a male employee explained that the four-person set meal was only meant for four diners. "But the platform didn't state that," the woman told 8World. "I didn't know before I bought the coupon." The staff explained that there were limited seats in the restaurant. If they were to allow large groups to dine in and each group were only to order a four-person set meal, it would ... » Learn More about ‘Can’t afford then don’t eat’: Restaurant and customer squabble over coupon redemption

Villagers in the northern Khon Kaen province are complaining of a seafood “factory” that has been dumping foul smelling wastewater into public drains. Hundreds gathered in the Mueang Kao subdistrict’s Sirirat Village to plea for help from local agencies. The smelly black water spills out from the drains, stinking up homes, and has even travelled into locals fields. Thousands of villagers are complaining that they’re affected by the smell and the flies it attracts. Many locals were seen wearing medical masks and pointing to the source of the wastewater, a home that’s been converted into a seafood factory which has been dumping wastewater, polluting the water in the area. One villager told local media the problems started last October, when the owner changed his home into a seafood factory. Locals don’t know what’s being used to wash the seafood but the wastewater is dumped into the public drain, which travels throughout the village, giving homes in the area a common ‘rotting fishy’ ... » Learn More about North eastern villagers protest fishy smells from seafood factory wastewater
