Keeping children active with traditional games

Seeing children play traditional games is uncommon these days as more often than not, the young ones are glued to electronic devices. Some have probably never even heard of games such as lompat getah, galah panjang or batu seremban. However, some parents believe such games are an important part of childhood and a way to encourage children to stay active. For instance, housewife N. Devika, 44, has decided that she is not going to allow her two daughters to play with just electronic gadgets, but also teach them the fun outdoor games she used to play as a child. “When I was a little girl growing up in Penang, I used to play hopscotch, batu tujuh and lompat getah. “Board games such as snakes and ladders, ludo and chess as well as congkak used to be my favourite, ” she said, as daughters Rhea and Dheana played on their house porch. Seven-year-old Rhea was balancing on one leg while trying to pick up a pebble on the ground, doing her best not to step out of a hopscotch box ... » Learn More about Keeping children active with traditional games

ITF extends Tokyo Games qualification window to June 14

(Reuters) - The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Thursday said the qualification period for this year's Tokyo Olympics would be extended by a week until June 14 to accommodate the postponement of the French Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The French Tennis Federation last week said the claycourt Grand Slam would be held one week later than originally planned, beginning on May 24 and finishing on June 13. The ATP and WTA world rankings as of June 14 will be used to select players eligible for direct acceptance into men's and women's singles and doubles in Tokyo. "The change of ranking date from June 7 to June 14 is to reflect the new dates of 2021 Roland Garros," the ITF said in a statement https://www.itftennis.com/en/news-and-media/articles/itf-revises-entry-ranking-date-for-tokyo-olympic-tennis-event. It’s not the end after Tokyo – veteran diver Mun Yee’s game for Hanoi

PETALING JAYA: The Tokyo Olympics may not be the final international outing for national diver Leong Mun Yee. The 36-year-old veteran is game for another SEA Games stint end of this year if Malaysia Swimming want to tap into her experience to combine with the younger divers. It will be a history-in-the-making achievement if Mun Yee makes it to the SEA Games in Hanoi as it will be her 12th appearance. No other Malaysian athlete has lasted that long when it comes to competing in the SEA Games and Mun Yee wants to show that she is still determined and committed to keeping up with the sport. “I wanted to call it a day at the Olympics earlier and I’ve informed Malaysia Swimming about it, ” said Mun Yee. “But then I was asked to consider whether I want to continue on a bit as the SEA Games is just four months after we come back from the Olympics. “If I am needed, I will continue until the SEA Games, ” said Mun Yee. Sheffield Utd lose McBurnie for last few games of season

(Reuters) - Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie will play no part in their seven remaining Premier League games of the season after suffering a fracture in his foot, interim manager Paul Heckingbottom said. McBurnie picked up the injury in last weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Arsenal and it could also cost him his place in the Scotland squad for the European Championship this summer. Heckingbottom has now lost two forwards in quick succession after captain Billy Sharp underwent surgery on a thigh problem this week. "He (McBurnie) has got a stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal so we've lost two forwards, which isn't positive," said Heckingbottom before Saturday's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Sheffield United are bottom of the table with 14 points from 31 games and relegation will be confirmed if they lose to Wolves and Newcastle United avoid defeat against West Ham United. Tokyo Olympics chief commits to Games as COVID-19 infections surge; fresh calls to postpone or cancel

TOKYO: Tokyo's Olympics chief said on Friday (Apr 16) that Japan was committed to holding a safe Games this summer, as a surge in COVID-19 cases prompted an expansion of contagion controls and with fresh calls for the Games to again be postponed or cancelled. The government is set to expand quasi-emergency measures to 10 regions as a fourth wave of infections spread, casting more doubt on whether the Olympics can be held in Tokyo in fewer than 100 days. "We're not thinking of cancelling the Olympics," Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said, speaking on behalf of the organising committee. "We will continue to do what we can to implement a thorough safety regimen that will make people feel complete safety." Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura earlier told reporters the government was considering adding Aichi, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba to six other prefectures already under contagion controls, including the cities of Tokyo and Osaka. A final decision is expected on ... » Learn More about Tokyo Olympics chief commits to Games as COVID-19 infections surge; fresh calls to postpone or cancel

Senining airs side on game-fixing issue

The ARQ Builders Lapu-Lapu City Heroes were merely returning the favor to the Siquijor Mystics. According to Rendell Senining, this is the reason why the Heroes played haplessly against the Mystics last Wednesday in the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup at the Alcantara Civic Center in Alcantara, Cebu. As a consequence, the Lapu-Lapu team looked like it connived with Siquijor in a game-fixing scheme, drawing the ire of many basketball fans on social media. Senining, who was seen shooting his first free throw with his left hand and then uses his right for his second charity attempt, said Iloilo played that way out of frustration and confusion over what the Siquijor team was doing in the game. The 5-foot-10-point guard said the Heroes intentionally missed their free throws and their other shots so the game would be stopped, and not because they were trying to shave points. “When we noticed that they (the Mystics) were disgracing the game with what they were serving us, we thought to ... » Learn More about Senining airs side on game-fixing issue

Not so Naiise after all: Vendors voice anger at founder Dennis Tay and say rot began much earlier

SINGAPORE - Accusations of sob stories and delayed as well as missing payments are emerging from suppliers and partners of beleaguered retailer Naiise a day after founder Dennis Tay announced he was liquidating the company and filing for personal bankruptcy. Several brand owners took to social media to express frustration at how Mr Tay blamed Covid-19 for poor business and the company's undoing. Many said late and missing payments and mismanagement of funds have been a problem since as early as 2016, calling into question Tay's intentions. Co-founder of Nom Nom Plush, Ong Yin Hao, told The Straits Times he dislikes "how (Tay) angled it as 'Covid did me in'". Owed around $15,000 for his food-themed plushies, Mr Ong faced late payments on and off since consigning with Naiise in 2015. He continued as "their sales records were good", and he would eventually get paid - although six to eight months late. "They were expanding, but we vendors were constantly owed money," said Mr Ong, ... » Learn More about Not so Naiise after all: Vendors voice anger at founder Dennis Tay and say rot began much earlier

Home-based learning: What have we learnt from the great HBL experiment?

SINGAPORE - As students of all levels returned to school this past week, it was announced that home-based learning (HBL) is here to stay. Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said recently that online learning is set to become routine, suggesting that HBL could be held once a fortnight, for starters. Amid the coronavirus pandemic , HBL was rolled out nationwide after schools shut in April. After the circuit breaker to stem the spread of Covid-19 ended on June 1, most students in primary and secondary schools alternated between being physically in school and HBL, on a weekly basis, for a month. Now that the weekly rotation is over, it is timely to assess what lessons were learnt from the big HBL experiment and its chief benefits that can also be reaped in the physical classroom. Educators interviewed by The Straits Times say virtual and classroom learning are two distinct beasts, but there are useful synergies between the two, which, when combined, could lead to students ... » Learn More about Home-based learning: What have we learnt from the great HBL experiment?

Dortmund look to keep hold of young squad after exiting Europe

After losing to Manchester City in Europe, Borussia Dortmund must now  focus on keeping together a young squad which includes striker Erling Haaland and Champions League history-maker Jude Bellingham. Phil Foden's thunderbolt shot at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday sealed Man City's 2-1 comeback win in the quarter-final, return leg. The result gave City a 4-2 win on aggregate to set up a Champions League semi-final clash with Paris Saint Germain. Dortmund's dreams of the last four in Europe are over, but, more worryingly, they are seven points from qualifying for next season's Champions League with six Bundesliga games left. However, their young squad is maturing and 17-year-old Bellingham's outstanding performance grabbed Pep Guardiola's attention. Four days after scoring his first Bundesliga goal, the England midfielder opened the scoring against City to become the second youngest goal-scorer in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
