SINGAPORE - Singapore's statutory boards, companies and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) made some progress in appointing more women to their boards last year, according to the Council for Board Diversity (CBD). In an update issued on Sunday (April 11) on women's participation on boards, the CBD said statutory boards showed the most improvement, followed by companies and then IPCs. But the increases still fell short of the council's short-term targets set in 2019, when it was established by the Ministry of Social and Family Development to promote a sustained increase of women on boards in Singapore. In 2019, the council's goal for statutory boards and IPCs was set at 30 per cent "as soon as possible". For companies, the goal was set at 20 per cent by the end of last year, 25 per cent by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030. Statutory boards showed the most improvement, with an increase of 2.4 percentage points as at December last year, compared with end-2019. In the middle of the Covid pandemic “now is the winter of our discontent”
In the northern hemisphere anyway, winter is on the way, a dangerous time for authorities trying to mitigate the sudden surge of new cases and deaths from Covid-19 in parts of Europe, the UK and the US. With a vaccine timeline still ‘flexible’, the only cushioning to a further spread of the pandemic is more social distancing, face-masks, attention to hygiene. And lockdowns. Whilst there is no evidence that the ambient temperature has much effect on the direct spread or strength of the coronavirus, medical officials say the colder weather brings people indoors where there is more direct interaction of people, accelerating the spread of Covid-19. Th virus continues to rage in South America as well, though it’s heading into its summer instead. In the US, still without a declared winner in the presidential elections, Joe Biden has spent his early days as President-elect pleading with Americans to pay greater attention to the relentless North American surge of Covid-19. Post-Covid era of hybrid work beckons in the United Kingdom
NUNHEAD: Consultant Rachel Watson enjoys being based at her home that looks onto the London skyline but misses the office vibe. She will soon get the best of both worlds as Britain’s coronavirus lockdown eases. United Kingdom businesses are planning for a hybrid or flexible workplace, splitting time between home and offices when the latest restrictions are finally relaxed in June. Watson worked mostly in London’s City finance district, for corporate procurement specialists Proxima, until the Covid-19 pandemic erupted one year ago and turned the area into a ghost town. The 34-year-old Scot now works for Proxima from the apartment she shares with pet beagle Kobe in the south London suburb of Nunhead, six miles (9.6 kilometers) from the office, with a window view of London’s Shard skyscraper. “I do enjoy working from home in terms of having more of a work-life balance — being able to spend more time in my community, being able to switch off work and be in your home — and I don’t ... » Learn More about Post-Covid era of hybrid work beckons in the United Kingdom

Some cleaning firms see higher demand as more people return to the workplace, but challenges remain
SINGAPORE: A day after it was announced that more employees in Singapore will be allowed back at the workplace from Apr 5, Clean Lab received an urgent request for a deep-cleaning service. “The company asked if we can do a deep clean of their office carpet immediately,” said Clean Lab’s business development manager Serene Chang. “They mentioned that their office has been left unused for a long time and dirt is building up.” That was not the only enquiry that came through, and the local cleaning and disinfection company soon found its services fully booked for the next two weeks. Apart from deep-cleaning and disinfection services, more companies are looking for professional help who can be stationed at their offices for regular cleaning and maintenance. “Some companies have previously engaged regular cleaners to be at their office daily but during the pandemic last year with everyone working from home, they terminated this service. Now that more people are going back to the ... » Learn More about Some cleaning firms see higher demand as more people return to the workplace, but challenges remain
South Korea to resume wider use of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, exclude people under 30
SEOUL: South Korean authorities said on Sunday (Apr 11) they will move ahead with a COVID-19 vaccination drive this week, after deciding to continue using AstraZeneca's vaccine for all eligible people 30 years old or over. South Korea on Wednesday suspended providing the AstraZeneca shot to people under 60 as Europe reviewed cases of blood clotting in adults. People under 30 will still be excluded from the vaccinations resuming on Monday because the benefits of the shot do not outweigh the risks for that age group, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said in a statement. Three vaccinated people in South Korea are reported to have developed blood clots, with one case determined to be correlated to the vaccine, Choi Eun-hwa, chair of the Korea Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices, told a briefing. That case was a type of blood clot considered less serious than the type being examined by European authorities, she said.
