Palace downplays PH’s decline in World Press Freedom ranking

ASSEMBLY Supporters, employees and talents of ABS-CBN stage a march from the Commission on Human Rights to the House of Representatives in Quezon City, as they protest other related issues being raised against the Duterte administration. —INQUIRER/NIÑO JESUS ORBETA MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Thursday downplayed the Philippines’ decline in ranking in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, saying the country’s two-notch fall does not really mean anything. The Philippines placed at 138th from 136th last year in the Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontière (RSF) or Reporters Without Borders. “Unang-una, dalawang position lang po yan. Two positions lower. De minimis po yan, walang masyadong ibig sabihin,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in an online briefing. (First, that’s only two notches. Two positions lower. That’s de minimis, not much significance.) Roque noted that the Philippines is still at the fourth spot among Southeast Asian countries and ahead of Myanmar, ... » Learn More about Palace downplays PH’s decline in World Press Freedom ranking

India posts world record COVID cases with oxygen running out

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India recorded the world's highest daily tally of 314,835 COVID-19 infections on Thursday as a second wave of the pandemic raised new fears about the ability of crumbling health services to cope. Health officials across northern and western India, including the capital, New Delhi, said they were in crisis, with most hospitals full and running out of oxygen. Some doctors advised patients to stay at home, while a crematorium in the eastern city of Muzaffarpur said it was being overwhelmed with bodies, and grieving families had to wait their turn. A crematorium east of Delhi built funeral pyres in its parking lot. "Right now there are no beds, no oxygen. Everything else is secondary," said Shahid Jameel, a virologist and director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University. "The infrastructure is crumbling." Six hospitals in New Delhi had run out of oxygen, according to a tally shared by the city government, and the city's deputy chief ... » Learn More about India posts world record COVID cases with oxygen running out

Pollution costs India $95B/yr

JAMMU: Toxic air that chokes Indian cities and kills hundreds of thousands of people also carries a grim economic burden for the country’s companies of around $95 billion a year, according to researchers who urged firms to lead the drive against pollution. Air pollution shortens lives worldwide by nearly three years on average and causes millions of premature deaths annually. India is one of the worst affected countries with many regions often cloaked in a smog of hazardous particles. The Lancet’s Global Burden of Disease study estimated pollution caused some 1.7 million premature deaths in India in 2019 — nearly 18 percent of all deaths in the country. Building on this, a new analysis by consultancy firm Dalberg Advisors found that pollution-related absenteeism, productivity loss, reduced consumer and tourist spending all add up to cost Indian businesses $95 billion a year, roughly 3 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. “Clean air is a precondition for businesses ... » Learn More about Pollution costs India $95B/yr

Jordan sets sober centennial fest

AMMAN: Jordan will mark 100 years of survival Sunday as a resource-poor country in a war-ravaged neighborhood, but the worst palace crisis in decades and the coronavirus pandemic threaten to overshadow any celebrations. “Nobody would have bet a dinar on the survival of the state, created in the desert and with almost no natural resources,” said Jalal al-Husseini, a researcher at the French Middle Eastern studies institute IFPO in Amman. On April 11, 1921, Abdullah became ruler of the newly created Emirate of Transjordan. The territory accorded him by colonial power Britain had little oil and severely lacked water, and it has since seen repeated wars on its borders, prompting three waves of refugees — yet has managed to survive. But there was palace turmoil barely a week before the anniversary, as a former heir to the throne was suddenly confined to his palace, accused of plotting to “undermine the security” of the kingdom. Days later, under family pressure, Prince Hamzah ... » Learn More about Jordan sets sober centennial fest

Paradise lost? Motorbikes threaten historic Kenyan isle

Motorcycle operators wait for transportation work as donkeys transporting goods walk past in the old town of Lamu on March 16, 2021, that is a United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, (UNESCO) heritage site. AFP LAMU, Kenya — In the old town of Lamu, a historic Swahili trading outpost, a motorbike taxi weaves through a crush of donkeys, market hawkers and wooden handcarts. A decade ago, there were only two vehicles on the sleepy island: a motorcycle for the electricity company, and the district commissioner’s 4×4. However in the past two years there has been an explosion in the number of noisy motorbike taxis known as “boda bodas”, with the two-wheelers clogging ancient narrow lanes and threatening Lamu’s coveted World Heritage status. “(Their) numbers are surging. Now we have almost 400 boda bodas,” said Abdulhakim Aboud, the deputy governor of Lamu County. Greta Thunberg blasts politicians for ‘ignoring’ climate crisis

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg accuses politicians and global leaders of "ignoring" the climate crisis. WASHINGTON - Environmental champion Greta Thunberg assailed powerful politicians on Thursday for "ignoring" climate change, as she demanded an end to fossil fuel subsidies and implored the current generation of leaders to take the crisis more seriously. Speaking as world leaders gathered at a climate summit hosted by US President Joe Biden, 18-year-old Thunberg warned that powerful interests and lawmakers were contributing to the "destruction" of living conditions around the globe. "How long do you honestly believe people in power like you will get away with it?" the Swedish activist said via videolink in a biting rebuke to a US House panel. "How long do you think you can continue ignoring the climate crisis, the global aspect of equity and historic emissions without being held accountable?" she asked. "You get away with it now, but sooner or later people are ... » Learn More about Greta Thunberg blasts politicians for ‘ignoring’ climate crisis
