(Andrew O'Connor: ABC News) Map: Exmouth 6707 It is not often people turn their backs on $100 million, but the Western Australia seaside town of Exmouth might be doing just that — cautious about what the money means.Mining magnate Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest made the $100 million pledge last week through his Minderoo Foundation, promising to protect the oceans.Mr Forrest wants to spend the money on tracking global fishing patterns, research into plastics pollution, and to develop what he labelled a "world-class research facility" at Exmouth's newly established Ningaloo Centre. But the announcement had many locals in the 2,500-strong town up in arms as soon as it was made.Their concerns centre around a call by the foundation last year to close part of the coast around Exmouth — and other fisheries … [Read more...] about Exmouth residents dubious about what Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest’s $100m for oceans means
Joshua Burroughs Norman, 24, had spent the night drinking when he got behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz sedan in the early hours of December 29, 2018. He bought food at a petrol station, where an attendant noticed he was swaying and slurring his words, before he returned to the road and fatally struck 21-year-old Adam Joseph at O'Halloran Hill, in Adelaide's south. Mr Joseph, who had also been out drinking and was waiting for an Uber to arrive, died at the scene. A sample taken after the crash revealed Norman's blood alcohol content was at least 0.191 but could have been as high as 0.21 - more than four times the legal limit - at the time of the crash. Sentencing him in the District Court on Tuesday, Judge Jane Schammer said Norman's actions had forever changed the lives of Mr Joseph's family and friends. "Your reckless and selfish decision to drive, while grossly affected by alcohol, had tragic consequences," she said. Judge Schammer said the service station attendant had served … [Read more...] about SA drink-driver jailed for ‘selfish’ crash
Geoffrey Mortensen pleaded guilty in Elizabeth Magistrates Court to two counts of ill-treating an animal over his failure to mitigate the harm suffered by his Fox Terrier cross named Brandy. The RSPCA seized the dog from Mortensen's property in 2017 and it was found to be suffering from an enlarged eye, an ingrown and infected toenail causing an abscess, advanced dental disease, ear infections and roundworm infestation. In a statement to the court, chief veterinarian Brad Ward said Brandy would have suffered a very high degree of pain over a long period of time as a result of the untreated conditions. Magistrate Brian Nitschke jailed Mortensen on Tuesday for just over six months but suspended the term, placing him on a two-year good-behaviour bond. He also banned the 54-year-old from owning any animals until further notice. RSPCA chief inspector Andrea Lewis said the level of neglect endured by Brandy was among the worst she had seen. "This was an older dog, blind, deaf and totally … [Read more...] about SA man gets bond over ill-treating pet dog
Marvel president Kevin Feige has said that the Disney-Fox merger, which allows characters such as the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was finalised after the studio already had a five-year plan in place. He said that while the goal is to integrate the characters into the MCU, ‘it will be a very long time’ before fans can expect to see it happen - certainly not in Avengers: Endgame, due out in April.Speaking to i09, Feige said, “It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really, it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”Feige had hinted in December that Marvel could begin work on introducing the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the … [Read more...] about Marvel already has five-year post Avengers Endgame plan in place; what does it mean for X-Men, Fantastic Four?
