Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) president Peter Cayco said Rondina and Pons showed interest to represent the country in beach volley competition, prompting them to forego the tryouts for the national women’s team in indoor play. Rondina and Pons came from different universities, but they are billed as the top beach volleyball players in the country today. MANILA, Philippines -- The Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) is optimistic of the country's chances in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games after the country's best players turned out in droves during tryouts for the national team. LVPI president Peter Cayco said national coaches Shaq Delos Santos (women’s) and Dante Alinsunurin (men’s) now have a "good problem" at their disposal in the wake of the large number of players who showed up and signified certified their intentions to play for flag and country. “The two-day tryouts for the women’s national team was very good. News Volleyball: Eya Laure, Angel Canino eager to prove worth in national team tryouts
MANILA, Philippines—While most of the attention was on the senior players during the women's volleyball team tryouts on Wednesday, some up-and-coming youngsters also caught the eye of the coaches at the Arellano Law School Gym. National team mainstays such as Alyssa Valdez, Aby Maraño, Dawn Macandili, Jia Morado and Majoy Baron were among the more than the three dozen players who showed up at the gym, all looking to lock up their spots in the pool. Also turning up at the tryouts were several players who looked to earn their place in the under-23 squad, including University of Santo Tomas rookie Eya Laure and De La Salle-Zobel spiker Angel Canino. Mau, the Filipino-Hawaiian spiker, arrived late, but it didn’t matter as she delivered a glimpse of what she can do when she represents the country in various international competitions, including the 30th Southeast Asian Games. At one point, she soared high for a booming spike from the left wing, leaving a small crowd of fans, reporters and fellow players very impressed.
