It has puzzled scientists for over 100 years but now they appear to have cracked it: what, exactly, is it that causes that wince-inducing sound when you pop your knuckles? Love it or loathe it, knuckle-cracking is very common. Earlier studies have established that not all joints can be cracked, and that -- for that those that can -- the act can't be repeated for another 20 minutes. But the source of the sound remained a mystery. And "popping", it turns out, is exactly what it is, researchers said on Thursday after finding that the distinctive cracking sound was caused by the collapse of microscopic bubbles of joint fluid in the hand. Using a mathematical model alongside a geometrical representation of the joint, experts from Paris' Ecole Polytechnique and Stanford University in the United States simulated the events leading up to the crack. "The sound that is generated when one cracks his or her knuckles is due to the partial collapse of a cavitation bubble that's in the fluid in the … [Read more...] about News Cracked it! AI models can help unravel mystery of human brain, claim researchers
Cognitive neuroscientists are using the newly-developed artificial intelligence (AI) networks to enhance the understanding of one of the most elusive intelligence systems from which they learned: the human brain. In the work presented on Sunday at the 25th annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS), Aude Oliva of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her colleagues are learning much about the role of contextual clues in human image recognition. By using "artificial neurons," essentially lines of code and software, along with neural network models, the researchers can parse out the various elements that go into recognizing a specific place or object, Xinhua reported. "The fundamental questions cognitive neuroscientists and computer scientists seek to answer are similar," said Oliva. "They have a complex system made of components. For one, it's called neurons and for the other, it's called units. And we are doing experiments to try to determine what those … [Read more...] about AI models can help unravel mystery of human brain, claim researchers
Why antidepressants don’t work for all patients? Answer might be in your genes
Taking antidepressants might not always be useful in the battle against depression, as a group of researchers has found that every individual does not respond to these medications the same way. Even though most of the psychiatrists prescribe antidepressants to the patients, according to a recent research these medications don't work for everyone when it comes to major depression symptoms. The researchers have also said that the main reason behind the effects of such drugs is lying within the genomes. The victims of major depression usually experience suicidal thoughts, excessive crying, loss of interest, excess sleepiness, weight gain or weight loss and poor appetite. Dr. Marianne Müller, a psychiatrist at Johannes Gutenberg University, has said that these victims of the disease depend on the available antidepressants such as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRIs) Tricyclic, Atypical etc. Müller and her colleagues … [Read more...] about Why antidepressants don’t work for all patients?
