Come February 10, when the townsfolk of Bacolor go to the San Guillermo Parish Church for their fiesta celebration, they will enter the worship place through the upper windows, as what they have been doing the past 28 years since Mt. Pinatubo erupted and altered their lives in ways they never imagined. The San Guillermo Parish Church, originally built in 1576, stands just off the main highway linking Bacolor town to the rest of Pampanga province. Rebuilt in 1886, the structure is now literally half of its previous glory. The church’s bottom half is buried under six meters of lahar that swallowed the town and most of the province. It still serves the town’s faithful who access the building through what used to be second windows converted into doorways. “All of Bacolor is buried under lahar especially the downtown area where the church is,” says Renato Solidum, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Solidum was already serving the agency … [Read more...] about News Eruption, lahar, and resilience: Mt. Pinatubo 28 years after

What if Romeo and Juliet … remixes the Bard and makes a mess
By Carly Maga Theatre Critic Fri., Oct. 12, 2018 What if Romeo and Juliet … Created and directed by Jackie Gosselin. Until October 19 at Young People’s Theatre, 165 Front St. E. YoungPeoplesTheatre.ca or 416-862-2222. A major part of the tragedy in Romeo and Juliet are the number of chances that the characters have to avoid their eventual deadly fate. If only the letter reached Romeo in time, if only the two lovers had a bit more worldly wisdom, if only their families saw the uselessness in their feud. These “ifs” beg for a production like Jackie Gosselin and DynamO Théâtre’s What if Romeo and Juliet…, on this week at Young People’s Theatre, that deconstructs these moments and decisions that lead to the death of four young people, and offers alternatives. At least that’s what the production says it tries to do, using the language of physical movement and acrobatics. It begins with the four … [Read more...] about What if Romeo and Juliet … remixes the Bard and makes a mess
Juliet, Naked is a rom-com that’s deeper than it seems
By Peter Howell Movie Critic Thu., Aug. 30, 2018 Juliet, Naked Starring Ethan Hawke, Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd, Azhy Robertson, Megan Dodds, Lily Newmark and Lily Brazier. Directed by Jesse Peretz. Opens Friday at the Varsity. 97 minutes. 14A Juliet, Naked is a much more provocative title than it is a movie, but that’s only if you manage to resist this romantic comedy’s seductive charms. I almost did myself: I was “meh” about it at its Sundance Film Festival premiere in January, wishing that better use had been made of a book by Nick Hornby, one of my favourite authors. Article Continued Below A recent repeat viewing made a better impression, which is appropriate when you consider that the movie, directed by Jessie Peretz (Our Idiot Brother), is about how certain things — especially music and people — often need time to settle in. This would certainly describe the state of our protagonist Annie (Rose Byrne), … [Read more...] about Juliet, Naked is a rom-com that’s deeper than it seems
‘Hodlers’ complaining about the ‘special moron’ handling the Mt Gox sale are really complaining about Bitcoin itself
caption A series of sales from the Mt Gox horde has coincided with a collapse in the price of bitcoin. source Coindesk Bitcoin holders (or “hodlers” as they call themselves) are heaping abuse on a lawyer whose job is to sell bitcoin recovered from a massive 2014 cryptocurrency theft. The sales are depressing the price. These people are ridiculous. Bitcoin represents nothing except its price, and the price reflects supply and demand. Complaining about sales that depress the price of bitcoin is therefore like complaining about bitcoin itself. LONDON – Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee for the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange Mt Gox, has had a rough week. Here is a typical comment about him on Reddit’s r/Bitcoin page: “Nobuaki Kobayashi is some kind of special moron selling the bottom of a correction pushing the price down even further.” … [Read more...] about ‘Hodlers’ complaining about the ‘special moron’ handling the Mt Gox sale are really complaining about Bitcoin itself
