By Claire Floody Staff Reporter Ilya Bañares Staff Reporter Tues., Jan. 15, 2019 Toronto police are investigating after several Second World War medals were stolen from a private residence Saturday — one of which is extremely rare, according to an assistant professor at the Royal Military College of Canada. Michael Boire, who teaches Canadian military history and is a retired soldier, reviewed the stolen medals for the Star after police issued a news release Monday. Police said a suspect or a group of suspects entered a building in the area of Jarvis St. and Mt. Pleasant Rd., and stole numerous items from a home in the early morning hours of Jan. 12. The most notable was a box containing six medals: the War Medal 1939-1945 Article Continued Below the 1939-1945 Star the France and Germany Star the Defence Medal the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal the Military Medal Boire said the most valuable “by … [Read more...] about ‘Very rare’ Second World War medal stolen from Toronto home

Sinkhole closes busy downtown street in Davisville
By Emerald Bensadoun Staff Reporter Tues., Oct. 16, 2018 A large sinkhole in midtown Toronto has closed down a busy street, Toronto police say. Listed as a hazard, police say a large sinkhole formed near the intersection of Eglinton Ave. E. and Mt. Pleasant Rd. overnight. Large puddles of water could be seen forming over the sinkhole outside alongside lifted pavement, sectioned off by pylons. Eglinton Ave. is closed in both directions between Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Taunton Rd. According to a series of tweets, the Toronto Transit Commission says Routes 34 and 54 are experiencing detours both east and westbound via Cardiff Rd. and Roehampton Ave., off of Mt. Pleasant Rd. due to a watermain break, which formed the sinkhole. Routes 334 and 354 will also see detours in both directions until the watermain outbreak is contained. 311 Toronto has been advised, police say. Drivers should expect the closure to last through the morning rush on Tuesday. Article … [Read more...] about Sinkhole closes busy downtown street in Davisville
News Movie review: Subdued but powerful ‘Goyo’ delivers timely message
Three years ago, we were all stunned by the hot-headed heroics of "Heneral Luna." That historical film by Jerrold Tarog was a sleeper hit that woke up the nation's nationalistic passion during its long and successful commercial run in theaters. That was also the film the Philippines chose to send to the Oscars for consideration for Best Foreign Language Film. Its anti-American sentiments probably did not help its chances to make the nomination short list. Its sequel, the second of a trilogy, has finally been released. "Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral" is supposedly the most expensive Filipino movie ever made, which means it needs good box office performance to recoup its investments. The red carpet premiere of "Goyo" last August 30 was a grand affair, with the movie shown in cinemas 7, 8 and 9 of Megamall. Cinema 11 was reportedly added later to accommodate the whole cast from the stars to the extras, crew, staff, media, and even guests from high society. Following the death of Antonio Luna, … [Read more...] about News Movie review: Subdued but powerful ‘Goyo’ delivers timely message
Toronto’s ravines provide an ideal place to escape the summer heat
By Shawn Micallef Star Columnist Thu., July 12, 2018 “It’s cooler by the lake,” say the meteorologists when reading out temperatures during Toronto heat waves, but it’s also cooler in the ravines. In the noontime sun, it’s hot everywhere, but come evening, the ravines and their creeks, buried or not, are like the city’s air conditioning. Cycling on hot and humid nights, I’ve noticed abrupt temperature changes as surface streets dip into or pass by ravines, like on Danforth Rd. in Scarborough when it passes over a tributary of Highland Creek north of Eglinton Ave., or downtown on Harbord St. as it crosses buried Garrison Creek and its partially filled-in ravine at Bickford Park. It’s like finding a cold spot in a warm lake. The ravines in and around Toronto have come a long way since the 1960s when they were often polluted, used as dumping grounds and utility corridors, and thought of as a place where sinister … [Read more...] about Toronto’s ravines provide an ideal place to escape the summer heat
