Harvard Professor Proclaims Coconut Oil is “Pure Poison”

CAMBRIDGE – It’s a dietary fad, a “Superfood” and sometimes even used to remove makeup, but according to one Harvard University professor, coconut oil is nothing but poison. During a German lecture last month by professor Karin Michels of the department of epidemiology, Michels said coconut oil was “pure poison,” Business Insider reports. The comment, which has garnered attention from social media users around the world, has brought up an age-old question on food with saturated fat: is it good for us? One of the ‘Worst Foods’ Michels went on to add that coconut oil was one of the worst foods you could eat. Michels said there were no studies that showed the health benefits of eating coconut oil and added the oil was more “dangerous” than other types of fat, Business Insider continued. “It almost exclusively contains saturated fatty acids, ones that can clog the coronary arteries. You can identify fats that contain large quantities of saturated fatty acids by checking ... » Learn More about Harvard Professor Proclaims Coconut Oil is “Pure Poison”

Do oil palm plantations cause water scarcity?

Water scarcity is one of the major issues related to oil palm plantations. Oil palm has been branded as a “water-hungry” plant that drains the ground of water where it grows and allegedly threatens the sustainability of water resources in Indonesia. The water footprint, also known as “virtual water content” method, can be used to illustrate the water use of crops. It can be applied to analyze the environmental sustainability of crops. The water footprint, a concept introduced by Hoekstra (2003) and later refined by Hoekstra and Chapagain (2008), presents a framework to analyze the relationship between human consumption and the allocation of fresh water in the world. The water footprint classifies water use into three categories: green, blue and grey, specific to a location and period. Since the availability of water changes throughout the year and across years, demand also varies from time to time. Therefore, the calculation is based on the actual climate and production data in a ... » Learn More about Do oil palm plantations cause water scarcity?

Pemerkasa incentive good move to attract local workers, MPOB says

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM50 million allocation for the palm oil industry in the Strategic Programme to Empower the People and Economy (PEMERKASA) assistance package can further boost the sector’s effort to woo more local workers, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) said. Director-general Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir said the RM30 million to encourage investments in mechanisation and automation and RM20 million for purchase of machinery can help move the industry into mechanisation in its way forward. "Hopefully when we go into mechanisation it is less dirty and less dangerous and so maybe by then we can attract more locals especially the youth. "The grant can be used to buy more tractors to collect fruit bunches and therefore minimising the nature of harvesting by humans. I hope it will become something that is more tolerable for the locals, ” he told Bernama. The cost of one stuck ship in the Suez Canal – rising costs of fuel, household goods, food

That container ship is still stuck in the Suez Canal. It’s created a huge traffic jam at either end – some 240 ships. Even if they clear the blockage (get the ship out of the way to let other ships pass) soon, it’s predicted to take most of April to clear the backlog. The cost to world shipping has been estimated at 9-10 billion US$ each and every day. The Ever Given is 400 metres long, about as long as the Empire State Building is high, and weighs 200,000 tonnes. The ship ran aground, stuck sideways in the Canal, last Tuesday with high winds and a sandstorm affecting navigation. Not going to affect you? Think again. The Ever Given has become Very Stuck and is delaying the shipment of goods from Asia to Europe and North America, and back the other way, through the world’s busiest shipping channel, handling some 12% of the world’s shipping traffic. Despite the ship’s rudder and propellor being cleared, the ship is still firmly wedged in place. Apart from a whole variety of ... » Learn More about The cost of one stuck ship in the Suez Canal – rising costs of fuel, household goods, food

Good Samaritans: Key to Covid-19 solution

LEST we forget, the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is the “war” we are solving in this pandemic. Isn’t survival the natural thing that comes to mind in times of emergency, not “recovery”? During World War 2, was there a nation that got so concerned about the dwindling economy that its finance/trade officials and business leaders allowed their industries to remain open or reopen as if there were no bombs and gunfire raining all over its cities and towns? Shortly after my swab test the other day, while waiting for my doctor outside his clinic, I overheard a wife weeping and begging on her phone for financial help from relatives because her husband was rushed to the emergency room fighting for his life due to cardiac arrest and she lacked the required hospital deposit for the most needed urgent operation. I sobbed in my seat (literally in tears) upon hearing her pleadings. And so, I volunteered to offer help and handed her all the money I had in my wallet. Then she sniveled ... » Learn More about Good Samaritans: Key to Covid-19 solution

How good bacteria can boost your child’s immunity

A strong immune system depends on many factors, one of which is a good digestive health. You are probably wondering: how are these two related and how can you improve your child’s digestive health? The basics of good health are simple enough in theory, i.e. eat healthy nutritious food, get plenty of exercise, drink enough water every day, manage stress levels and get enough sleep daily. What you may not be aware of is the importance of something called “gut microbiota”, which is basically a collection of trillions of microorganisms that are a crucial part of our gut’s ecosystem. Gut microbiota have many functions and help your child’s body with not just digesting food and extracting nutrients, but also influencing his immune system. In fact, the gut has been acknowledged as the first line of defence against disease. The Greek physician and Father of Medicine Hippocrates went so far as to say, “All disease begins in the gut.” Those helpful bacteria The gut, or the ... » Learn More about How good bacteria can boost your child’s immunity

How Gut Health is Important for a Healthy Body and Mind

CHIANG RAI – Do you sometimes feel physically exhausted, have a foggy brain, and feel moody or depressed for no apparent reason?  Usually when we don’t feel well we know it’s the result of partying too hard, not getting enough sleep, or stress at work. But sometimes when we don’t know why we are feeling bad, the reason could be hidden deep inside your digestive system. You might have a food intolerance or food allergy and are suffering the symptoms. And for people who live or travel in tropical countries, you might even have intestinal parasites and not even realize it. This is what happened to Nikki Kachum, whose experience led her to study nutrition as part of her healing journey. “After giving birth to my son a few years ago, I became severely intolerant to most foods.  I got down to about seven foods I could tolerate and my brain began to shut down. I couldn’t really think straight and was so foggy and down all the time. Anxiety was bad and I had no energy to do ... » Learn More about How Gut Health is Important for a Healthy Body and Mind

Sharing PH good practices in adolescent reproductive health, decentralization and family planning

Launched in August 2012, the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) Program of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Indonesia and Philippine country offices that involves Indonesia’s Badan Kependudukan dan Keluarga Berencana Nasional (BKKBN) or National Family Planning Board and the Philippine Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) has enhanced the family planning (FP) and adolescent reproductive health (ARH) programs in the Autonomous Region in Muslim in Mindanao, now the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) — as a result of some Muslim religious leaders, local chief executives, public health officials, youth leaders and other stakeholders’ exposure to Indonesia’s good practices in these programs. What has the SSTC program contributed to BKKBN and its Indonesian partners? BKKBN has two areas of interest in its partnership with PopCom: to learn about the Philippines’ good practices in ARH and about FP in our decentralized system of ... » Learn More about Sharing PH good practices in adolescent reproductive health, decentralization and family planning

Now is the time to create a health agency for disease control and prevention

IF the coronavirus pandemic has seared anything into the public mind, it is the fact that our public health system and health infrastructure are sorely lacking: 1) an agency to formulate, design and coordinate public policy to address a national health emergency or pandemic and 2) a central agency for disease control and prevention; similar to what most modern states have. As things stand today, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases is too ad hoc, provisional and unprofessional to serve as our principal policy-making tool for managing a health crisis such as a pandemic. There is more policing than policy design and evaluation in its operations. The Department of Health, as the regular department for health services in the executive branch, has a huge health bureaucracy to run and control. We should not expect it to double up as an agency to handle disease control and prevention. It is imperative, we think, for the Congress to turn its ... » Learn More about Now is the time to create a health agency for disease control and prevention
