First-year Tigers manager A.J. Hinch returns to Houston for the first time since being suspended by Major League Baseball for his role in the sign-stealing scandal that rocked the sport. With Hinch as their manager, the Astros were found to have used cameras and banged on trash cans to get an unfair advantage en route to winning the World Series in 2017. Hinch was fired following a lengthy investigation and was prohibited from managing last season before being hired by the Tigers. He’s expecting a warm reception in his first game back at Minute Maid Park. “Houston fans have been tremendously supportive to me and my family,” he said. “It’s home for me. That city matters to me. The fans have been tremendous and obviously it will be very emotional when I see them.” Detroit will be without slugger Miguel Cabrera, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with soreness in his left biceps. ... » Learn More about Hinch back in Houston, Mets in weather mess

Quarantine for vaccinated travellers to Thailand reduced to 7 days
For the past year the mandatory quarantine period in Thailand has been 14 days, sometimes up to 16 days and 15 nights. Now the Thai government has reviewed the quarantine period and announced changes. If you’ve been vaccinated against the coronavirus, the mandatory quarantine period will be reduced from 14 days to 7 days. The announcement was made by Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirankul in a press conference yesterday afternoon. Those who haven’t been vaccinated, but have a medical certificate declaring that they are Covid-free, will be required to quarantine to 10 days, Anutin said, according to Reuters. Minister Anutin says vaccinations must be administered within 3 months of travelling to Thailand. Travellers must still show negative Covid-19 test results issued within 72 hours of their departure to Thailand. Create law in the calendar year 2020
APRIL is the busiest month for most accountants, if not all, as the deadline for filing of the annual income tax return (AITR) of registered entities falls on or before the 15th day of the 4th month following the close of the taxpayer’s taxable year (April 15) for entities reporting on a calendar year (December 31). Adding to the heavy workload of accountants are certain recent critical developments affecting the completion of financial statements and audit such as the implementation of a stricter community quarantine status, the nonextension of the April 15 deadline and the enactment of Republic Act 11534 (Create Law). The Create Law is officially effective on April 11, 2021 (15 days after its publication on March 27), but has retroactive provisions affecting the tax computations in the taxable year 2020. One of the most relevant provisions of the Create Law that affects the financial statements (FS) and AITR is the reduction of the corporate income tax rate from 30 percent to ... » Learn More about Create law in the calendar year 2020

INQUIRER.net file photo / Ryan Leagogo MANILA, Philippines – More than 865,000 individuals or over 276,000 families in Quezon City affected by the implementation of enhanced community quarantine have already received financial aid, the local government said on Wednesday. Citing the city treasurer’s office, the QC government said 276,389 families have received assistance through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as of April 13. The city used the beneficiaries’ list of the DSWD Social Amelioration Program (SAP), Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), and also some of the waitlisted beneficiaries of SAP who belong to the “low-income bracket and in vulnerable sectors.” QC Mayor Joy Belmonte said that it was an “achievement” to have distributed ... » Learn More about Over 865,000 individuals receive financial aid in QC
For Some Expats Thailand is No Longer an Affordable Paradise
For decades, the lure of Thailand’s Land of Smiles drew both working and retired expats in droves to its warm weather, glorious beaches, friendly locals and laid-back lifestyle. Many of those attracted by Thailand’s cheap cost of living, easy long-stay visas, traditional culture and friendly locals were single, elderly men looking to bring a new sparkle into their lives. Many met and married their dream girls and found themselves fathers at an advancing age, but did their best to look after their new families as well as a good number of their new wife’s relatives. Thailand was also popular for older couples from the West, with Americans and the British especially attracted by the lure of reliable weather and inexpensive housing. Fast forward some 15- 20 years or so and things are now very different, The weather still ranges between hot and very hot, and the chance of getting a second try at being a husband and father is still there, but changes to the retirement visa and the ... » Learn More about For Some Expats Thailand is No Longer an Affordable Paradise
MAS leaves monetary policy unchanged amid COVID-19 uncertainties, low inflation
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s central bank left its monetary policy unchanged on Wednesday (Apr 14), as widely expected, on the back of weak inflation and uncertainties from the COVID-19 pandemic. In its half-yearly monetary policy statement, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said it is maintaining “a zero per cent per annum rate of appreciation” of its policy band. The width of the policy band and the level at which it is centred also remains unchanged. All 15 economists polled by Reuters had predicted that the central bank would keep its exchange rate-based policy settings unchanged. Instead of setting interest rates, the MAS manages the economy through the currency . It lets the exchange rate float within an unspecified policy band, and changes the slope, width and centre of that band when it wants to adjust the pace of appreciation or depreciation of the Singapore dollar. Singapore keeps monetary policy on hold amid patchy recovery
SINGAPORE - Singapore’s central bank kept monetary policy settings unchanged on Wednesday (April 14) and said the accommodative stance was appropriate due to a benign inflation outlook and global economic uncertainties caused by the pandemic. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) was, however, more upbeat about official 2021 growth projections while data showed the economy unexpectedly growing in the first quarter from a year earlier. The central bank manages monetary policy through exchange rate settings, rather than interest rates, letting the local dollar rise or fall against the currencies of its main trading partners within an undisclosed band. Barring a setback to the global recovery, Singapore’s economy is likely to exceed the upper end of the official 4–6 per cent forecast range, the MAS said. But the sectors worst hit by the crisis will continue to face significant demand shortfalls, it added. “As core inflation is expected to stay low this year, MAS assesses that ... » Learn More about Singapore keeps monetary policy on hold amid patchy recovery
