Farm laws are death warrants for farmers, says Arvind Kejriwal
Describing the contentious farm laws as “death warrants” for farmers, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made Aam Admi Party’s political ambition to cross over Yamuna into Uttar Pradesh clear at a kisan panchayat in Meerut on Sunday. Promising to control erring sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh on the lines of power distribution companies in Delhi, Mr Kejriwal asked the gathering to vote for a party with the right intent. He said farmers were in pain for 70 years because they have been cheated by different governments and parties. Now the three farm laws have made it a matter of life and death. “All that the farmer has been asking for is the right price of his produce,” he said. Party manifestoes, he said, promise the right price of their crops but when these parties come to power, they forget about their commitment. Coronavirus | U.S. advisers endorse single-shot COVID-19 vaccine from J&J
U.S. health advisers endorsed a one-dose COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson on Friday, putting the nation on the cusp of adding an easier-to-use option to fight the pandemic. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to quickly follow the recommendation and make J&J’s shot the third vaccine authorized for emergency use in the U.S. Vaccinations are picking up speed, but new supplies are urgently needed to stay ahead of a mutating virus that has killed more than 500,000 Americans. After daylong discussions, the FDA panelists voted unanimously that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks for adults. If the FDA agrees, shipments of a few million doses could begin as early as Monday. “There’s an urgency to get this done,” said Dr. Jay Portnoy of Children’s Mercy Hospital, Missouri. “We’re in a race between the virus mutating and new variants coming out that can cause further disease and stopping it.” More than 47 million people in the U.S., or 14% of the ... » Learn More about Coronavirus | U.S. advisers endorse single-shot COVID-19 vaccine from J&J
In oil-rich Iraq, a few women buck norms, take rig site jobs
BASRA : It's nearly dawn and Zainab Amjad has been up all night working on an oil rig in southern Iraq . She lowers a sensor into the black depths of a well until sonar waves detect the presence of the crude that fuels her country's economy. Elsewhere in the oil-rich province of Basra, Ayat Rawthan is supervising the assembly of large drill pipes. These will bore into the Earth and send crucial data on rock formations to screens sitting a few meters (feet) away that she will decipher. The women, both 24, are among just a handful who have eschewed the dreary office jobs typically handed to female petroleum engineers in Iraq. Instead, they chose to become trailblazers in the country's oil industry , donning hard hats to take up the grueling work at rig sites. They are part of a new generation of talented Iraqi women who are testing the limits imposed by their conservative communities. Their determination to find jobs in a historically male-dominated industry is a striking ... » Learn More about In oil-rich Iraq, a few women buck norms, take rig site jobs
1 cr more free LPG connections in 2 yrs, easier access to cooking gas planned: Oil Secretary
The free LPG connection scheme is one structural reform of the Modi government that has been internationally acclaimed for ridding indoor household pollution and improving women's health. And now, the government plans to give one crore more free LPG connections to the needy over the next two years and make it easier to access cooking gas to achieve near 100 per cent penetration of the clean fuel in the country. Oil Secretary Tarun Kapoor said plans are in the works to provide LPG connection with bare-minimum identity documents and without insisting on residence proof of the place of availing the cooking gas. Also, consumers would soon get a choice of getting a refill cylinder from three dealers in his or her neighbourhood instead of being tied to just one distributor, who may not be able to provide LPG on demand due to availability or other reasons. In an interview, Kapoor said a record-breaking 8 crore free LPG connections were provided to poor women households in just ... » Learn More about 1 cr more free LPG connections in 2 yrs, easier access to cooking gas planned: Oil Secretary

Why doctors dislike Bengal’s new health law
They say new rules that make over-billing by private hospitals a criminal offence will hurt their ability to treat patients properly, says Subir Roy. Illustrations: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com . Private hospitals and nursing homes in West Bengal have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Last month, a 16-year-old girl died at a Kolkata hospital after she was admitted with stomach pain. Her relatives alleged medical negligence and a local mob damaged the hospital and beat up at least one doctor. Also in the news were three nursing homes in north Bengal being investigated for running a child racket. A week after the vandalism, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting at the Kolkata Town Hall with the bigwigs of several leading private hospitals and gave them a dressing down, pulling up individuals and naming names. She also announced the setting up of a regulatory commission to monitor private healthcare setups and the tabling of a bill in the state assembly ... » Learn More about Why doctors dislike Bengal’s new health law
To beat the heat, ‘tent city’ in Singhu shifts to vacant land
A ‘tent city’ that had come up at a petrol pump near the Singhu border protest site in December last year, is being shifted to a vacant ground a few metres away to offer some respite from the soaring heat in the city. Around 50 tents were pitched on the ground by Wednesday. Trenches have also been dug up along the perimeter to avoid waterlogging during heavy rain. Around 150 insulated tents were pitched at the petrol pump when the mercury had dipped and the city received record rainfall. However, with the temperatures now soaring, volunteers at the tent city said that it had become inconvenient for protesters to continue living inside the tents under direct sunlight. Startup jobs seen aplenty in 2021 as post-pandemic hiring gathers pace
Mumbai: Startups are likely to witness a strong hiring uptick this year, courtesy a bounceback in business and revenue, with growth for some even surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The pace of recruitment will increase this year, said about 72% of startup founders surveyed by debt fund InnoVen Capital in its annual Startup Outlook Report. Startups operating in logistics, digital media , e-commerce and deep-tech sectors are the most bullish about hiring. “At the beginning of the festive season in August and September last year, demand came back and the pervasive changes in consumer behaviour also played to the strengths of digital-first consumer-focused business models,” Ashish Sharma, chief executive officer of InnoVen Capital, said in the report. The Covid-19 pandemic hurt most companies last year, and they had to make tough calls around realigning team sizes and salary cuts, although a few enjoyed immediate tailwinds (edtech, online gaming, etc.), the report stated. ... » Learn More about Startup jobs seen aplenty in 2021 as post-pandemic hiring gathers pace
