Zambian gov’t expresses concern over abuse of cyberspace
Video Player Close LUSAKA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Monday expressed concern that abuse of cyberspace has continued despite heightened campaigns against the vice. Chief Government Spokesperson Dora Siliya said the government was concerned with the rampant abuse and called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to ensure that citizens were protected from all forms of crimes committed in cyberspace. She was commenting on a video circulating on social media in which a young man wearing a ruling party T-shirt and splashing huge sums of money claiming to have come from the minister meant to discredit her political rivals. "Videos such as that one are the very reason why the government wants to make sure that it provides a safe cyberspace for citizens to operate in, because if anyone can decide they are going to take a video and allege untruth, then who is going to be safe, not our children, not our women, not anybody in society," she told reporters ... » Learn More about Zambian gov’t expresses concern over abuse of cyberspace

Red Devils Invade Germany for Korea’s World Cup Kickoff
June 12, 2006 20:56 The Korean football team's official fan club invaded Germany on Monday morning to root for the squad in its first match against Togo. One 80-strong contingent of the Red Devils left Korea the previous day and arrived at Frankfurt Airport via Hong Kong at 5 a.m. Another 80-strong group who arrived via Amsterdam also unpacked their bags at a camping site in Mörfelden, some 40 minutes from the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt where the Korean soccer squad will play Togo on Monday night. Another 320 Red Devils who left the country last Friday took a bus from Paris on Monday morning to join the rest at the camping site, where they were welcomed by some 50 members of the Korea Worldcup Organisation Komittee, a group of second-generation Korean Germans. The Red Devils brought 1,000 Red Devil T-shirts with them to distribute to ethnic Koreans there. All paid for their own trip, which cost on average around W1.7 million (US$ 1,700). “The reason we’re here today is ... » Learn More about Red Devils Invade Germany for Korea’s World Cup Kickoff
Korea United in Celebrating Victory Over Togo
June 14, 2006 21:08 Forget about the economic downturn, the growing wealth gap and controversy over inflated apartment prices: Koreans were able to escape reality for a moment thanks to their football team’s victory over Togo in the World Cup. When the Taeguk Warriors came from behind to beat Togo 2-1, the nation was briefly united in ecstasy. Office workers showed up with voices husky from Tuesday night’s cheering, celebrating the victory and the “World Cup bonus.” “I wish every day was like this. I really got off to a good start at my workplace for the first time in years,” said Kim Dae-hwan (43) at Daewoo Motor Sales. ”I haven’t felt comfortable on my way to work due to stress over my performance, but today is different, and I feel really good,” Kim said, grinning. But some office workers were disappointed by their winnings in the sweepstakes. Too many had bet on the Korean squad beating Togo 2-1, so the returns were relatively meager. The rush to appropriate icons
When mainstream politics becomes recklessly instrumental, nothing is spared; even great idols and cultural symbols are trivialised through a process of appropriation in order to manipulate people’s emotions. In the campaign to the Assembly elections in West Bengal, we have been witnessing the competitive game of demonstrating one’s affinity with the icons of Bengal, such as Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore. The Bharatiya Janata Party is at pains to demonstrate that it is not a north Indian party; and even if it loves to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’, it understands what the average Bengali bhadralok regards as his ‘cultural capital’. No wonder the leaders of the party, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, often express their close ‘attachment’ to Vivekananda, Tagore and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Bhadralok consciousness This symbolic politics of cultural appropriation cannot be adequately understood without looking at the consciousness of the Bengali ... » Learn More about The rush to appropriate icons
