TENGGARA MP Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique wants immediate action taken to improve the drainage and irrigation system of the flood-prone Kota Tinggi district. Halimah, who is also National Unity Minister, said massive floods in 2006 and 2007 had paralysed Kota Tinggi town for more than a month. “After 14 years, we see it happening again. “I hope that relevant agencies such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) can come up with plans to upgrade the drainage system in both rural and urban areas in the district. “Studies should also be conducted to improve the situation, especially as Kota Tinggi is often the district that is most affected during floods. “By now, we should have been able to figure something out to improve the situation, ” she said, adding that DID should also be given more allocation to fix the problem. Halimah was speaking to reporters after visiting a temporary shelter in Kota Tinggi with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. She said the Prime ... » Learn More about ‘Immediate action needed to improve drainage in Kota Tinggi’

Homeless want the vaccine
Reports by TARRENCE TAN, TAN SIN CHOW, RENA LIM, JO TIMBUONG and VENESSA DEVI Karthi, a 33-year-old former lorry driver, said many of them intended to be vaccinated against Covid-19 but did not know how to register for the immunisation programme. Rough sleeping renders the homeless not only more vulnerable to Covid-19 infection but also unable to hold on to their belongings, such as mobile phones. “They will just cut our pants when we are asleep and steal whatever’s inside. We usually wouldn’t realise we had been robbed until we wake up the next morning, ” said Karthi. Meanwhile, Abu Maslan, a 40-year-old Sarawakian transient who has made Jalan Hang Lekiu his home for over a year with his four-year-old son, echoed Karthi’s worries. “I don’t bother keeping anything in my pocket, ” he said, as he cradled his son. Like his peers on the streets, Abu Maslan is aware that living in unsanitary conditions on the streets makes them vulnerable to Covid-19 infection and therefore they ... » Learn More about Homeless want the vaccine

Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Tony Bennett continues recording with Lady Gaga
The family of Tony Bennett has revealed that the legendary singer has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, breaking their silence on his condition four years after he was diagnosed. His wife, Susan, told AARP Magazine in an interview published on Feb 1 that the 94-year-old singer, best known for the ballad I Left My Heart In San Francisco , had been losing his ability to make decisions. Despite the diagnosis in 2016, Bennett recorded a new album with Lady Gaga that is expected to be released later this year, the magazine and Bennett's publicist said. The album, a follow-up to their 2014 collaboration Cheek To Cheek , was recorded between 2018 and 2020. AARP magazine said raw documentary footage of the sessions showed Gaga at one point when Bennett, in good voice but at times seeming lost and bewildered, sang the solo passage of a love song. "Gaga looks on, from behind her mic, her smile breaking into a quiver, her eyes brimming, before she puts her hands over her ... » Learn More about Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Tony Bennett continues recording with Lady Gaga
Fil-Ams suffer from attacks, harassment amid rising anti-Asian violence in US
MANILA, Philippines — Several Filipinos living in the United States were not exempted from the increasing cases of violent acts directed towards Asians in the country amid the ongoing global health pandemic. Since February, there have been reports of Filipino-Americans who have been victims of an unprovoked assault. While most of them survived, an elderly Filipino man was killed in what was called an apparent “random attack” last month. This surge in the number of violence, harassment, and discrimination – which does not only affect Filipino-Americans but also the whole Asian community in the country – has already been observed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. This has also triggered protests held by local community groups, activists, and policymakers in the U.S. Activists have attributed these hate crimes against people of Asian descent to ex-president Donald Trump’s repeated references for COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” in his speeches. Below is a look back ... » Learn More about Fil-Ams suffer from attacks, harassment amid rising anti-Asian violence in US

About 100 containers of plastic waste still sitting at NBCT
GEORGE TOWN: About 100 containers of plastic waste are being held at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), awaiting Customs and port clearance to be sent to their country of origin. This is a big drop from the almost 1,000 containers sitting at NBCT about a year ago. “Most of them have been sent back to their country of origin since last year. Now, there are only about 100 containers left at the port, ” said Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan. He said the containers belonged to importers with valid licences. “The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a reduction of such containers coming into the port as freight and shipping charges have increased two-fold. “It is actually not a wise move to bring in containers during this period as shipping charges, from roughly US$700 per container, have increased to US$1,200 due to a shortage of containers, ” he said previously. The turnover of most containers was taking a longer time due to ... » Learn More about About 100 containers of plastic waste still sitting at NBCT
