As NBA season opens, is it Warriors-Celtics when it ends? Opening night last year delivered a good forecast of how the NBA season would turn out. Cleveland edged Boston in the opening game before Houston ruined Golden State's championship ring celebration with a victory over the Warriors in the nightcap. Those teams ended up as the last four standing in the 2017-18 season, with both conference finals going seven games. Golden State and Cleveland won Game 7s on the road before the Warriors swept the Cavaliers for their second straight title. The matchups this time in the doubleheader Tuesday night (Wednesday morning Manila time) on TNT feature the Celtics hosting Philadelphia, and the Warriors welcoming Oklahoma City. Golden State remains the team to beat and the Celtics are a good bet to inherit that role in the East with LeBron James gone, so it's very possible a couple teams playing on the first night of the season will also be playing on the last. … [Read more...] about As NBA season opens, is it Warriors-Celtics when it ends?

In the NBA playoffs, teams quick to tinker with lineups The "Death Lineup" breathed new life into the Golden State Warriors. It was yet another reminder: In the NBA playoffs, where even a brief downward slide can be enough to end a season, even the best teams won't hesitate when they feel a need to shake up their starting lineups. Desperate times in the first round sent Cleveland to desperate lineup measures. Toronto, the team that finished with the NBA's second-best regular season record, sought a spark by changing its starting five against the Cavs for Game Three of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Utah showed Houston a new look Sunday (Monday Manila time) in Game Four of their West semifinal matchup, and while the Jazz slowed the high-powered Rockets at times they still fell into a 1-3 series deficit. https://sja.sportradar.com/w/Philstar Global/14453058/403100 And then there's the Warriors, who were coming off a big loss in Game Three against New … [Read more...] about In the NBA playoffs, teams quick to tinker with lineups
Sun., March 18, 2018 All right, you’ve done a wonderful job as usual this week and the mailbag’s as full as it usually is. It’s late Saturday afternoon, I think I’ve earned a nap-filled night on the couch after another long week and with a 1 p.m. start that means a 9:30 a.m. departure from Casa Doug, I can’t promise I’ll get to the latecomers; I think a night with the machine turned off is in order. If I miss anything ‘cause I don’t want to wake up early and work before I have to work, I’ll get to them as I can. - Q: I am finishing up a month in Torremelinos, Spain. There hasn't been snow but there has been tons of rain. That, with a devastating flu, sure put a damper on my time here. Article Continued Below One thing I don't understand is why some writers insist on putting a - in front is numbers. Blake and Eric K are famous for this. For example they said Fred was a plus -31 last night. This means he was actually … [Read more...] about Casey, playoffs, naps: All in the weekend mail
Sun., March 11, 2018 You people have gone berserk again. Tons here and it’s all over the place and I know it’s a bit later than usual but I ended up working far longer and harder than I’d expected yesterday and things got delayed. And the time change didn’t do me any favours this morning. Have at this, I have plans for a quiet afternoon perhaps with Baseball Steve planted on a stool watching the game and then getting the work done. - Article Continued Below Q: Good morning Doug, Beautiful morning though a little cool. I would like to comment on your writing about away games while sitting at home, the office or a local stool. Not sure how others feel but one thing that is missing is the feeling of you sitting in a hotel room clicking away on the keyboard with a cool one nearby. That is terrible really. Just want to say I admire the quality of reports being as good as the past – excellent reporting. Bob A: I appreciate that and we’re … [Read more...] about U Sports, playoffs, who’s in the band, all in the mail
LOS ANGELES: Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James thinks the NBA playoffs format is just fine, and talk of tweaking it is misguided. “I think our league has been built the right way as far as when it comes to the post-season,” James said Wednesday after the Cavaliers’ first practice since the All-Star break. Western Conference teams have won three of the last four NBA titles, the Cavaliers the only Eastern interlopers in 2016. The Golden State Warriors won in 2015 and 2017 — beating the Cavs both times — and the San Antonio Spurs won in 2014. LeBron James AFP PHOTO During the All-Star break NBA commissioner Adam Silver said there had been discussions in the league office about changing the format — perhaps by taking the top eight teams from each conference but re-seeding them 1-16 by overall record or, more dramatically, taking the top 16 regular-season teams regardless of conference. “It just changes the landscape of the history of … [Read more...] about Cavs star James opposes NBA playoff changes
