The Xinjiang-related motion recently passed by Canada's House of Commons, which seriously distorts facts and attacks China's Xinjiang policies, is a gross interference in China's internal affairs and malicious provocation against the 1.4 billion Chinese people. It fully exposed the hypocrisy and vicious intention of certain Canadian politicians to undermine Xinjiang's development and stability, and interfere in China's internal affairs. The essence of Xinjiang-related issues is about combating violent terrorism, radicalization and secession. China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has sincerely implemented the UN's Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, learned from similar practices in other countries, and conducted de-radicalization practices in accordance with the law. What it has done completely conforms to the principles and spirits in the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, and is important and effective for preventing terrorism and combating radicalization. Few OTT platforms show pornographic content, screening needed: SC
The Supreme Court on Thursday said that few over-the-top (OTT) platforms show some kind of pornographic content at times and there should be a mechanism to screen such programmes. Illustration: Dominic Xavier/ Rediff.com A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to place before it the recent guidelines of the government to regulate social media platforms on Friday, when it would hear the plea of Amazon Prime Video's India head Aparna Purohit challenging the Allahabad High Court order rejecting her anticipatory bail in connection with FIRs lodged against her over web series 'Tandav'. “A balance has to be struck as some OTT platforms are also showing pornographic materials on their platforms,” the bench, also comprising Justice R S Reddy, said. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Purohit, termed the case against her as “shocking” saying this woman is an employee of Amazon and she is neither a producer nor an actor but ... » Learn More about Few OTT platforms show pornographic content, screening needed: SC
Self sufficiency ‘basically achieved’ in grain seeds
China's grain output has exceeded 650 million metric tons for six consecutive years and the country has basically achieved self-sufficiency in terms of grain seeds, political adviser Wan Jianmin said during an interview before the opening of the fourth session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on Thursday. "We have enough food to eat and can buy rice and wheat flour whenever we want," said Wan, who is also the vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He added that 96 percent of plantations in the country are using domestically cultivated crop varieties, and some of the rice varieties have already reached the same standards found in other rice producing nations such as Japan and Thailand. But there are still shortfalls still in some varieties and in market regulation, which should be enhanced with targeted policies and technologies to further ensure food security and help people eat well, Wan said. ... » Learn More about Self sufficiency ‘basically achieved’ in grain seeds

Courts getting to grips with Civil Code
How much should a man pay his ex-wife for home chores in their divorce settlement? Well, according to a recent court ruling, the sum is 50,000 yuan ($7,700). Last month, Fangshan District People's Court in Beijing ordered a defendant to pay his ex-wife that amount as compensation for the housework she did during their five-year marriage. It was the first verdict the Fangshan court had made with reference to a new legal provision-compensation for unpaid domestic duties-under the Civil Code, which took effect on Jan 1. According to the code, a spouse is entitled to seek compensation in a divorce if he or she bore greater responsibility for raising children, caring for elderly relatives or assisting their partner's work. Moreover, the courts should decide the amount if the two sides are unable to agree on a figure. Media reports on the landmark ruling generated great public interest, especially after a hashtag was created on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like service. CJI’s ‘will you marry her’ query was based on judicial records: Official
The Supreme Court's query asking a rape accused whether he would marry the victim was based on 'judicial records' containing an undertaking of the man that he would marry the minor girl, a relative, after she attains 18 years of age, it was stated on Wednesday. The remarks by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde on Monday during the hearing of a plea of the accused, who had challenged the cancellation of his anticipatory bail by the Bombay high court's Aurangabad bench, had invited sharp reactions. Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Brinda Karat wrote to CJI Bobde and urged him to withdraw his remarks, saying that courts should not give an impression of supporting such 'retrograde' approaches. Several women's rights activists, eminent citizens, intellectuals, writers and artistes had also written an open letter to the CJI demanding an apology and retraction of his remarks. An apex court official termed the criticism as unfair and ... » Learn More about CJI’s ‘will you marry her’ query was based on judicial records: Official
Legislators welcome first judicial interpretations
National legislators have welcomed the first batch of judicial interpretations of the Civil Code, regarding it as a strong step in promoting a fundamental and comprehensive civil law. The first batch involved seven interpretations of laws, including some related to property, labor disputes, marriage and family, and inheritance. They were released by the Supreme People's Court, the country's top court, at the end of last year. The interpretations and the code took effect on Jan 1. The top court has reviewed 591 existing interpretations and normative documents since the code was passed by the National People's Congress, the country's top legislative body, in May. It has revised 111 and abolished 116 that were inconsistent with the code or could not meet the new requirements for social and economic development. Regarding the code as a milestone in the improvement of the civil legal system, Ma Yide, an NPC deputy, said the formulation and clarification of the interpretations will ... » Learn More about Legislators welcome first judicial interpretations

How the BJP has outwitted the Congress
There are two national political parties in India, but only one of them seems to be any good at politics, says Mihir S Sharma. T he Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be playing in a completely different league than the Congress. The BJP is in the Premiership, while the Congress is playing in the fourth division, with the air of a team in danger of further relegation. Consider the whole 'nationalism' thing. Remember how the BJP's assault on speech in campuses first hit the headlines? With the tragic death of Rohith Vemula. That, for the BJP, was politically disastrous: Aspirational young Dalit men were precisely whom they had to woo over if Hindutva was to grow, and Uttar Pradesh -- for example -- was to be won. How has it ended? With Kanhaiya Kumar as a focus of mockery and disdain for large parts of the middle class, while the human resource development ministry can go right on making India's university campuses safe for the ABVP, and only the ABVP. This reframing of the ... » Learn More about How the BJP has outwitted the Congress
