By Peter Holley The Washington Post Thu., Jan. 17, 2019 When his chemotherapy patients leave the hospital to continue treatment at home, Edward Greeno faces a new challenge. He can no longer ensure they’re taking their medicine. Greeno, the medical director of the Masonic Cancer Clinic at the University of Minnesota, has come to realize that some patients, like children hiding naughty behavior from a parent, will fudge the truth to avoid his disapproval, even when their health is at risk. To combat patients’ fibbing and forgetfulness, Greeno has begun deploying a new tool in recent months: a pill embedded with a tiny, ingestible sensor. The sensor transmits data from inside the patient’s body to a wearable patch placed on their abdomen, which then connects to a mobile app that patients and doctors can access. That data offers a new window into patients’ health and behavior, Greeno said, allowing doctors to remotely monitor someone’s … [Read more...] about Forget to take your medication? 2018 was a thankless year, give thanks anyway
Too often Christmas and the New Year are centered on desire and greed. Perhaps that is unavoidable in a consumption-centered capitalist society. During particularly hard years the holidays and Christmas cheer are lost to feelings of despair, even hate. There are even chain mails circulating on social media pleading with the rest of the internet to stop making a spectacle of all the merrymaking, for the benefit of those who have no way of being merry. My personal cross to bear this year came in the form of a recurrence of my spine injury. A slip disc which will no doubt require surgery, my second in as many years. Frustration over the possibility of disability, as well as the financial burden it will place on my family has boiled over many times over the past few days. My mind is addled with anger over how helpless I am, and confusion from the pain killers prescribed to numb the pain shooting down my lower extremities. But I know I have … [Read more...] about 2018 was a thankless year, give thanks anyway
Billionaire Dan Gilbert has already bet $5.6 billion on Detroit’s future, but money can’t solve his biggest challenge
Dan Gilbert moved his mortgage company Quicken Loans to downtown Detroit in 2010 and founded his real-estate company Bedrock a year later, when the city was just a few years from bankruptcy. Bedrock has invested or allocated a total of $5.6 billion across 100 or so properties in downtown Detroit and nearby neighborhoods, and said it has 98% occupancy of office and residential properties. Gilbert’s family of companies employs 17,000 people and is the largest employer and taxpayer in Detroit. Its level of influence on a major American city is unprecedented. Getting the lasting support of the local community is an ongoing challenge for Gilbert, and one that will take much … [Read more...] about Billionaire Dan Gilbert has already bet $5.6 billion on Detroit’s future, but money can’t solve his biggest challenge

BoT sounds alarm on baht speculation
In a rare move, the Bank of Thailand has threatened to investigate some financial institutions with operations in Thailand for possible involvement in baht speculation. The central bank's announcement comes amid the baht's continued rally against the US dollar. The local currency, up nearly 2% versus the greenback in 2018, is now the second-best performer in Asia this year after the Malaysian ringgit. The central bank has found that some financial institutions' behaviour could indicate involvement in baht speculation through heavy transaction volume, said Bank of Thailand governor Veerathai Santiprabhob, who added that such practices have been done in favour of customers who may be speculating in baht.Regulators need to launch an in-depth examination of such activities and consider tightening the rules to thwart speculators, Mr Veerathai said without mentioning any names. He said the speculative activities were unlike the ones in the past that prompted the central bank to require … [Read more...] about BoT sounds alarm on baht speculation
