Dentsu’s Shiodome building symbolises its market dominance & towering stature: Must they really sell it?
Sandeep GoyalI was privileged to be one amongst the first foreign visitors to be welcomed at the new Dentsu building at 1-8-1, Higashi-shimbashi, Minato-ku in Tokyo, when it first opened in 2002. What an awesome building it was, and still is, 20 years later. All glass. Shaped almost like a powerful boomerang piercing the blue sky. The exterior façade had an impressive gloss with the sky and clouds reflecting off its mirror like surface. The building concurrently had a gentle sophistication which was imparted by the ceramic printed glass that covered the vertical and horizontal gradations of the giant edifice. The first thing that caught your eye as you entered the majestic lobby (so sprawling, they used to say you could land a Cessna there) of the building was a unique all-white chessboard with two U-shaped all-white chairs – masterpieces created by Yoko Ono – the wife of the legendary John Lennon.
