It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 26 kms, according to Phivolcs. The tremor was not expected to cause damage and aftershocks. MANILA -- A magnitude 4.5 quake struck waters off Ilocos Norte province on Monday, state seismologists said. The tectonic tremor hit 40 kilometers northwest of Pagudpud town around 2:20 p.m., said Phivolcs. At a depth of 2 kilometers, it was felt in neighboring Pasuquin town at Intensity 2, which may cause hanging objects to swing slightly and make water in containers to oscillate noticeably, the agency said. The quake was not expected to spawn aftershocks or create major damage to property, Phivolcs said. The Philippines straddles the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
