Normal life came to a halt on Tuesday in several states amid protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The Bill, piloted by Union home minister Amit Shah, was comfortably passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday night. It seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees, who escaped religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. AssamAssam's Brahmaputra Valley saw widespread protests owing to a statewide bandh called by students' unions and Left-democratic organisations. The shutdown, led by the All Assam Students' Union and the North East Students' Organisation, has coincided with the bandh called by Left-leaning organizations, including SFI, DYFI, AIDWA, AISF and AISA. New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Tuesday, criticised the Citizenship Amendment Bill passed by the lower house of the Indian Parliament which seeks to help non-Muslims facing persecution in his country and two others, and said he strongly condemns the proposed Indian legislation.
