Illustration: Dominic Xavier/ Rediff.com Retail participation in direct equities rose at a rapid pace last year. This is evident from the rise in the number of new demat accounts that were opened -- a record 6.8 million between April and October 2020. Non-institutional participation in the cash segment of the market, which serves as a proxy for retail participation, also went up between March and November 2020, from an average of around Rs 22,500 crore (Rs 225 billion) to Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion). Those choosing the direct investment route, however, need to bear in mind that beating professional fund managers or even the leading benchmark indices over the long term, is not an easy feat to pull off. From U.S. domination to energy transition, two years that changed oil
NEW YORK, - Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took the stage at the world's largest energy conference in 2019 to declare an age of U.S. dominance after a decade of rapid shale development made the United States the world's top oil and gas producer. Two years later, the oil industry is recovering from the worst recession it has ever experienced after measures to contain coronavirus stopped billions of people from traveling and wiped out one-fifth of worldwide demand for fuel. The U.S. fossil fuel industry is still reeling after tens of thousands of jobs were lost. The pandemic has also accelerated the energy transition , interrupting a steady rise in fuel consumption that may have otherwise continued for several more years unabated. Oil demand may never recover from that hit. This year, the CERAWeek conference in Houston is entirely virtual and numerous panels are dedicated to the transition to the low-carbon economy of the future, hydrogen technologies and climate ... » Learn More about From U.S. domination to energy transition, two years that changed oil

A new coronavirus variant found in New York City
A new coronavirus variant is spreading rapidly in New York City and in the Northeast and could dampen the effectiveness of some current vaccine candidates, according to researchers. The new variant, called B.1.526, carries mutations that help the virus dodge the body's natural immune response and the effects of monoclonal antibody treatment. It was identified by teams at the University of California (Caltech) and Columbia. In connection with new variant strains, Pfizer and BioNTech said Thursday they have begun a study to test whether a third dose of their authorized vaccine would fight new strains, such as the one first identified in South Africa. Earlier studies found that both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines offer less protection against the South African strain. Moderna said Wednesday it had made a new version of its vaccine targeting the South Africa strain. The research group at Caltech scanned for mutations among hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 ... » Learn More about A new coronavirus variant found in New York City
FDA lays groundwork for vaccine boosters
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking to quickly authorize COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, but there are concerns about the safety of such approvals and newly tweaked vaccines without massive trials. The FDA issued new guidelines Monday that trials for coronavirus booster shots aimed at emerging variants can be narrower than those for the original COVID-19 vaccines. The guidelines are intended to speed up the review process amid worries that the new variants will undermine efforts to halt the virus' spread. While new guidance also says a tweaked COVID-19 vaccine can skip the months-long process of a randomized clinical test that would compare it with a placebo, there are some concerns if the modified vaccines will be safe enough without major trials. Some other vaccines are regularly updated similarly. Because the influenza virus evolves rapidly from one year to the next, vaccine developers have to come up with new recipes annually. Moreover, the newly tweaked ... » Learn More about FDA lays groundwork for vaccine boosters
