In Myanmar, rental book shops are one such casualty. A rental book store is a place where people can rent books, much like a library. Unlike conventional libraries, which allow people to borrow books for free, the rental book shop operates more like a private business. People pay a small fee to borrow books, magazines and comics. Rental book shops played an important role in keeping Myanmar literary traditions popular, giving people access to many authors. Before 2000 there were almost two book rental stores in each ward. They were just like a small university for book lovers. With the appearance of internet cafes in the early 2000s, the role of the rental shop slowly began to decline. VCD film vendors and recording artists had competition from YouTube, and Myanmar books began to appear on the internet too. Now, anyone with a smart phone can access a PDF version of a Myanmar classic novel or historical book. WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court ruled on Monday (May 13) that a consumer lawsuit accusing Apple of illegally monopolising the company's App Store may proceed, opening a new avenue of antitrust litigation against the iPhone manufacturer. In a 5-4 ruling, the justices rejected Apple's argument that consumers lacked standing to proceed with their lawsuit because the tech giant was merely an intermediary with app developers. The class-action lawsuit from 2011 maintains that Apple, which takes a 30 per cent commission on app sales, abuses its monopoly position, resulting in higher prices. The opinion written by the newest court member, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, said consumers had a right to pursue their case because they have a direct relationship with Apple."If a retailer has engaged in unlawful monopolistic conduct that has caused consumers to pay higher-than-competitive prices, it does not matter how the retailer structured its relationship with an upstream manufacturer or supplier," … [Read more...] about US court allows lawsuit on Apple’s App Store monopoly
MUMBAI (BLOOMBERG) - Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, sealed another deal to expand his retail footprint and add heft in a battle with Amazon.com and Walmart in India. Reliance Brands Ltd agreed to purchase the 259-year-old British toy store chain Hamleys from C Banner International Holdings Ltd for an undisclosed amount, the unit of Ambani's Reliance Industries said in a statement late on Thursday (May 9). The transaction would "catapult Reliance Brands to be a dominant player in the global toy retail industry," it said. The acquisition is the latest in a string of purchases in Ambani's push into the consumer business, which he says will contribute nearly as much as to the conglomerate's total earnings as its core energy business by the end of 2028. Adding Hamleys would give Reliance 167 stores across 18 countries. The company is already a master franchisee of the toy store in India, where it operates 88 outlets. For Hong Kong-listed C Banner, the sale would mark a retreat from the … [Read more...] about Asia’s richest man buys iconic British toy store chain Hamleys
