The Supreme Court has had to contend with concerns that some magistrates might succumb to pressure in politicized disputes on which President Duterte had publicly stated his prejudgment. Phnom Penh. A Cambodian court jailed an Australian filmmaker for six years on Friday (31/08) after finding him guilty of espionage for flying a drone over an opposition party rally. James Ricketson, 69, was arrested last June after he was photographed flying the drone above the rally organized by the now-dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) before communal elections. Ricketson was charged with espionage, although it remains unclear for whom he was spying. His family called the court sentence an "absolute tragedy". "The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to convict James Ricketson and sentences him to six years in prison for espionage and collecting information that is harmful to the nation between December 2010 and June 2017," Judge Seng Leang said. PUTRAJAYA: A carpenter was awarded a sum of RM310,000 in damages by the Federal Court today for unlawful detention and for assault while he was being remanded by police in 2008. The five-man bench comprising Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum and Federal Court judges Tan Sri Hasan Lah, Datuk Seri Balia Yusof Wahi, Tan Sri Aziah Ali and Tan Sri Jeffrey Tan Kok Wha ruled in favour of Mohd Hady Ya'akop after dismissing the appeal by four police officers and the government. Justice Balia, who delivered the court's judgment, had increased the exemplary damages for unlawful detention from RM50,000 to RM100,000. He also maintained the appellate court's decision to award Mohd Hady RM50,000 for false imprisonment and RM160,000 in damages for assault.
