Big blow to Imran Khan govt! Pakistan remains on FATF’s grey list, gets June deadline to complete action plan
In a major blow to the Imran Khan government, Pakistan on Thursday failed to exit the Financial Action Task Force`s (FATF) grey list. The FATF has strongly urged Pakistan to swiftly complete its full action plan before June 2021. In a statement, the FATF said, "Since June 2018, when Pakistan made a high-level political commitment to work with the FATF and APG to strengthen its AML/CFT regime and to address its strategic counter-terrorist financing-related deficiencies, Pakistan’s continued political commitment has led to significant progress across a comprehensive CFT action plan, including by: demonstrating that law enforcement agencies are identifying and investigating the widest range of TF activity, demonstrating enforcement against TFS violations, and working to prevent the raising and moving of funds including by controlling facilities and services owned or controlled by designated persons and entities." "Pakistan should continue to work on implementing the three ... » Learn More about Big blow to Imran Khan govt! Pakistan remains on FATF’s grey list, gets June deadline to complete action plan
Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s statue vandalised in Pakistan; second incident in a year
LAHORE: A statue of 19th-century ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore in Pakistan was vandalised by unidentified men on Friday (December 11). According to reports, the miscreants were reportedly upset over speeches of a few radicals in Pakistan. The nine-foot-tall statue of Singh, who died in 1839, was unveiled in June on his 180th death anniversary. The statue, made of cold bronze, shows the emperor sitting on a horse, and carrying a sword. Popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled over the Sikh empire in the Punjab region in the early half of the 19th century. Following the incident, local police arrested a teenager, identified as Zaheer, a resident of Harbanspura, Lahore in Pakistan. As per sources, he, along with his companions, disfigured the statue, installed at Royal Fort in Lahore. The nine-feet tall statue of the Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh was unveiled at Lahore Fort in June 2019. Pakistan to remain on FATF ‘greylist’
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Thursday decided to retain Pakistan on the “greylist” till the next review of its performance on the recommendations during the June Plenary session. At a press briefing, FATF president Marcus Pleyer said although Pakistan had made a significant progress, it was still to fully comply with three of the 27-point action plan it had been presented with in June 2018 when it was first put on the “greylist”. He urged Pakistan to make fast progress on the remaining obligations. The three points on which the FATF has sought urgent action by Pakistan pertain to effective steps — in terms of financial sanctions and penalties — against the terror funding infrastructure and the entities involved. After assessing the measures taken during the June session, the FATF would verify the implementation and test the sustainability of reforms undertaken by Pakistan to this end. To a query as to when Pakistan would be put on the “blacklist” , the FATF ... » Learn More about Pakistan to remain on FATF ‘greylist’
Toolkit controversy: Pakistan’s ISI was working through Pieter Friedrich to manufacture dissent in India: Here’s how
The toolkit controversy, followed by the Disinfo Lab report titled ‘The Unending War: From Proxy War to Info War Against India’, has unveiled the sinister plan of Khalistanis and has brought to light the Pakistani players fuelling the propaganda campaign against India amidst the ongoing farmer protests. The Delhi Police did a press conference on Monday on the toolkit and uncovered the role of ISI sponsored propagandist Pieter Friedrich in the case, an individual whose name also appeared in the toolkit. Responding to the questions on his anti-India campaign asked during an interview by an Indian media outlet, Friedrich, instead of factually responding to the questions, seemingly read a prescribed script and said – “Indian security forces today are infiltrated by and operating as agents of the Nazi-inspired RSS paramilitary.” During the press conference, the Delhi Police stated that Indian security agencies have been keeping an eye on him since 2006 when his connections with a ... » Learn More about Toolkit controversy: Pakistan’s ISI was working through Pieter Friedrich to manufacture dissent in India: Here’s how

‘Maybe Myanmar is our Pakistan’
Long before U.S. President Barack Obama publicly asked India to use its influence to do more for a return to democracy in Myanmar, U.S. officials were quietly, but unsuccessfully, pushing New Delhi to take a tougher line against the military junta. At each push, Indian officials told the U.S. that while New Delhi also wanted to see a democratic government in Yangon, it believed this could be better done by engaging with the junta rather than cutting off ties with it. Moreover, India had its own important geopolitical reasons to develop ties with the military regime. More than 40 U.S. Embassy cables classified from New Delhi and Yangon, spread over the period from 2003 to 2009 and accessed by The Hindu through WikiLeaks, confirm the reality that in diplomacy, national ideals are no competition to that thing called “strategic interest.” India had no problem dumping old friend Aung San Suu Kyi (‘ASSK') to romance Myanmar's generals. The cables reflect U.S. frustration over the ... » Learn More about ‘Maybe Myanmar is our Pakistan’

U.S. surprised, happy at SAARC observer offer
The United States was surprised by an Indian suggestion in 2005 that it consider participation in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and Washington saw that as a possible attempt by New Delhi to “balance” Pakistan's request to include China in the grouping. Nine countries have been given observer status. Since the 14th SAARC Summit in New Delhi, they have attended the inaugural and closing sessions of the summits. A U.S. diplomatic cable dated November 17, 2005 ( > 45425: confidential ), accessed by The Hindu through WikiLeaks, deals with the possible logic behind India sounding the U.S. on the proposal. The cable, sent by U.S. Political Counselor Geoffrey Pyatt Jr., said that at a briefing on the 2005 SAARC Summit, Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary (SAARC) P.K. Kapur had told him that both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran supported a closer U.S. role in the regional body and requested feedback from the ... » Learn More about U.S. surprised, happy at SAARC observer offer
