Notices issued to Parrikar’s son over eco-resort construction
Panaji: The Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's son, Abhijat, in connection with a petition filed against him for alleged destruction of forested areas for the construction of an eco-resort. The division bench headed by Justices Mahesh Sonak and Prithviraj Chavan directed Abhijat Parrikar, promoter of Hideaway Hospitality and other respondents, including the state Chief Secretary, Secretary Environment and Forests, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests among others, to respond to the notice by March 11. On February 4, Abhijit Dessai, deputy sarpanch of the Netravali panchyat, had filed a petition seeking a stay on the construction of the resort near the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa. According to the petition, the project had caused destruction of the forested areas and that several laws had been by-passed and an ordinance was specially moved by the state's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition … [Read more...] about Notices issued to Parrikar’s son over eco-resort construction
South Goa collector calls for urgent meeting to discuss whale carcass
PANAJI: After several failed attempts to dispose off the carcass of a 7-meter long whale, South Goa collector Ajit Roy has called for an urgent meeting of various agencies including health, fisheries and Indian Navy on Monday to find a solution. A navy spokesperson said that state government departments and the Indian Navy were working in tandem to remove the carcass as quickly as possible and were even exploring the possibility of cutting up the decomposed whale into smaller pieces for easier burial. The dwarf sperm whale washed ashore on September 9, but nearly two weeks later it remains on the beach, which is in close proximity to Goa International Airport. Birds attracted by the decaying flesh could pose a risk to aircraft operating out of the airport. “The disposal of a rotting whale carcass at Bimbel beach, is being addressed by state agencies such as the health, fisheries, forest and tourism departments. The Indian Navy at Goa was also approached by the health officer - … [Read more...] about South Goa collector calls for urgent meeting to discuss whale carcass
A tour of Hindu Goan cuisine, with Kunal Vijayakar
The first time I went to Goa was on a bus. For some reason, the tickets I’d booked on Vayudoot (remember that dodgy airline?) for the handsome sum of Rs 250 got cancelled and I couldn’t re-book them. All the other flights to Goa were full by then, and I had to get to Goa for a wedding, so I jumped on a bus that took off from Dadar in the evening. It was a terrible bus. The seats were musty and cramped and the windows were dirty and the curtains smelly. The rattling promised to rearrange my insides, and so I thought the only way I could survive this ride was to get smashed and fall asleep. We reached Mahad, on the Bombay-Goa road, at about 10 pm for a dinner and evacuation stop. I headed straight to the bar to find some booze. Dark rum was the only strong alcohol they had. And although I don’t really drink rum, I bought a quarter because the rum was available only in quarts and not millilitres. By the time I had decided, paid and … [Read more...] about A tour of Hindu Goan cuisine, with Kunal Vijayakar
Goa Debates Renaming Road After Manohar Parrikar
Panaji: What's in a name? Ask the angry residents of South Goa's Margao town, who have innovatively resisted the christening of an approximately two km long refurbished road, after former Chief Minister later Manohar Parrikar. Last week, angry residents of Margao and Fatorda on their own volition, erected road signage dedicated to former leader of Opposition late Jack Sequeira and Goa's best known poet and Padma Shri late Balakrishna Bhagwant alias Bakibab Borkar, even as the local municipal council controlled by the Goa Forward party headed by opposition MLA Vijai Sardesai was gearing up to put up signage of its own, in the memory of the former Defence Minister. The road is expected to be formally named after Parrikar on February 13, his first birth anniversary. "Naming the road after Parrikar, who has nothing to do with Margao or Fatorda is a political move by Vijai. We want the road to be named after Jack Sequeira, who campaigned for Goa's identity during the Opinion Poll of 1967 … [Read more...] about Goa Debates Renaming Road After Manohar Parrikar
